Odense M

The research unit Consumption, Culture and Commerce (CCC) at the Department of Business & Management (DBM), University of Southern Denmark welcomes applications from highly qualified candidates for one or more exciting new positions as Professor in Consumption, Culture and Commerce. The positions are located in Odense, but teaching may also be required at the campus in Slagelse. The positions are vacant from 1st September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Who are your new colleagues?

CCC is an interdisciplinary group of researchers who focus on two over-arching themes: studies of consumer culture (e.g., consumption symbolism, branding, globalization and glocalization processes, sustainability) and socio-cultural perspectives on consumption, markets, and marketing with emphasis on theory development and critique.

The unit pilots a B.Sc. degree in Market and Management Anthropology, hosts three M.Sc. profiles in Marketing and delivers teaching in a number of other educational programmes.

DBM works both quantitatively and qualitatively to build bridges between applied and fundamental research. The Department houses seven vibrant research units (Strategic Organization Design, Centre for Integrative Innovation Management, Consumption, Culture & Commerce, Management of People, International Business & Entrepreneurship, Finance and Accounting) whose work is anchored in an understanding of the interactions between markets, organizations and individuals. It encompasses a variety of areas from evolutionary organizational models, economics and to new exotic forms of consumption. It is our ambition to be international leaders in these areas and to achieve synergy between research, teaching and knowledge-sharing.

A modern, forward-looking university SDU came 52nd in the Times Higher Education Young University rankings of 2016 and has around 30,000 students enrolled across its six campuses in Denmark. With more than 3000 staff benefiting from Denmark’s renowned levels of well-being and work-life balance, SDU has a strong focus on societal relevance and has adopted the United Nations’ Strategic Development Goals as its guiding principles.

What are we looking for?

The successful candidate is ambitious and will have an international profile in any area of relevance to the research unit, though preferably within focal areas such as market systems and market studies, market emergence, anthropology of technonology, medical anthropology, and health and technology. A substantial record of research publications in highly recognized journals in one or more of the research areas mentioned above is expected, as well as the potential to make advances both empirically and theoretically. Capacity to develop and apply for large external grants is essential. Further information can be obtained in the department’s qualification guidelines. Since the research of the unit is oriented toward the type of marketing research labeled Consumer Culture Theory (CCT), candidates working in this or related disciplinary research fields of consumption and market studies are preferred.

The candidates must be able to demonstrate teaching experience at varied university levels and be able to deliver high quality teaching within topics such as consumption studies, marketing and branding, globalization, and qualitative research methods. Successful candidates will be engaged in teaching in the B.Sc. Marketing and Management Anthropology programme, and in our Business Administration programmes at the bachelor and master level. Candidates are expected to be able to teach courses based on CCT, anthropological, and sociological approaches to consumption and markets and to supervise bachelor and master theses in the area of consumer research and marketing.

Beyond the research publication record and teaching experience, successful candidates will be expected to contribute actively to the social and academic lives at the department as well as participate in the guidance of doctoral students and junior faculty. Also, we expect active and constructive participation in the university's academic administration, and it is an advantage if the candidates have experience in securing external research funding, and in establishing strong ties with the international research community. Furthermore, the right applicants should thrive in a multi-disciplinary environment that seeks to contribute to a broad academic dialogue.

The successful candidate should have a Ph. D. degree within social sciences or a cross-disciplinary PhD with a significant social science contribution.

If the successful candidates are not fluent in Danish, (s)he will be expected to learn Danish within a period of three years. Within this timeframe applicants are expected to master Danish at a level which enables them to correct Danish exam papers and read administrative documents. Within a five-year period, applicants must be able to document Danish language skills at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The department believes in fostering a stimulating and inspiring environment for both faculty members and students. Also, the department addresses social challenges and knowledge exchange with society through high-quality study programmes and genuine engagement with external partners and society at large.
