Topic: A behavioral investigation of the determinants of strategic learning

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship at the Department of Economics, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, to be filled by September 1st, 2022. The PhD position is co-funded by the Danish Research Foundation and by the Department of Economics (grant n. 1028-00051A). The duration of the PhD position is three years, including a research stay abroad (the typical duration of the research stay abroad is 6 months). The PhD candidate will be involved in a project investigating the determinants of strategic learning from a behavioral economics perspective. The main supervisor will be Associate Professor Sibilla Di Guida, who has several publications within the topic. Job description The goal of this project is to expand and advance the understanding of the mechanisms driving human strategic learning in an economic context, and to provide a detailed overview of the determinants, characteristics, and dynamics that characterize it. As of today, how information is collected and elaborated, and how the context affects its understanding, is yet unclear. This project builds on previous research from Di Guida and her research team and contributes to the literature in two ways: 1) investigating in depth the determinants of strategic learning, specifically which past information affects strategic reasoning; and 2) exploring how strategic learning varies when the interaction happens either between humans or between humans and machines. This project is experiment based and requires different experimental techniques to best test the research hypotheses. Such techniques include in-person experiments using an eye-tracker, as well as on-line computer-based experiment s with human-human and human-machine interaction. The project bridges a wide gap in the behavioral game theory literature and provides insights for research on innovation and adaptation to changing environments. The project includes a series of seminars with internationally recognized experts in the field, and a closure workshop, which makes the environment ideal for a PhD candidate with an interest in pursuing and academic career after obtaining the PhD. The PhD candidate is expected to: help developing the experimental design and the experimental software, collect data, analyze data, write papers summarizing the results. The PhD candidate will work in close collaboration with Associate Professor Sibilla Di Guida ([email protected]) and all the phases of the research process will be supervised. The successful applicant has:
  • Master's degree in economics, cognitive psychology, or other relevant disciplines, or expected to obtain it before September 1st 2022
