Odense M

A three-year PhD scholarship to study transcriptional regulation of cell function at single-cell resolution is available in the group of Rasmus Siersbæk at the Functional Genomics & Metabolism Research Unit at Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark. The position is available from 1 August 2022 or soon thereafter. Application deadline is 1 May 2022.

Research Project

Precise regulation of transcription plays a pivotal role in determining cell function in normal physiology and pathophysiology. Transcription is coordinated by a complex interplay between multiple transcription factors and coregulatory proteins. These protein complexes have traditionally been studied using bulk methods relying on millions of cells (e.g. mass spectrometry-based methods).

You will lead a project supported by a Villum Young Investigator grant that aims to understand the transcriptional mechanisms controlling cell function at single-cell resolution. You will apply and develop advanced single-cell technologies to study the cross-talk between transcription factors and coregulators in individual cells. The goal is to understand how differences in transcriptional complexes between cells drive cellular heterogeneity, which impacts normal tissue function and disease progression (e.g. cancer).

Lab and Research Environment

You will be part of a dynamic, supportive, and ambitious research group consisting of both postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduate students. Our group applies advanced functional genomics and proteomics approaches, including single-cell methodologies, to understand how transcriptional mechanisms shape cell function in the context of cancer. We are positioned in the Functional Genomics and Metabolism Research Unit at Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark. Our unit currently hosts seven independent research groups with a strong focus on chromatin and transcriptional mechanisms in health and disease. It is an innovative, collaborative, and international research environment with a strong scientific and social network for students and postdocs. As part of the unit, you will have access to world-class facilities in next generation sequencing, single-cell technologies, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, and bioimaging.

Your Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated, innovative, and collaborative PhD student to lead this project together with a postdoc and undergraduate students. You have:

  • A Master’s degree in Life Science, e.g. Molecular Biology or Biomedicine. The degree must be completed before starting the PhD scholarship.
  • Experience with molecular biology or functional genomics technologies. Computational skills are considered advantageous.
  • Experience with transcriptional research.
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

We Offer

  • A three-year PhD position in a stimulating, international, and supportive research environment.
  • Enrolment in the PhD school of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology allowing you to build your own course programme and obtain teaching experience.
  • Training in single-cell technologies and data analysis as well as research management, oral and written communication, and networking.
  • Research exchange with an international collaborating institution depending on your research interests.
  • Access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.
  • A supportive scientific and social network for students and postdocs.
  • A competitive salary and social benefits (e.g. health coverage, parental leave, social security etc).
  • Support with practical, social and legal aspects (e.g. housing, visa, tax etc.) through our international staff office (ISO) and the department.

For further information, please visit our homepage or contact Assistant Professor Rasmus Siersbæk at [email protected] or +45 65502492.

Application, salary etc.
Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

• Detailed CV, including personal contact information
• Copies of diplomas, Bachelor as well as Master’s degree, including transcript of notes/grades
• At least two signed reference letters. Should your referees wish to send their letters directly to us, please have them use e-mail: [email protected] mentioning your name and the title of the position in the subject line. And please note that these also need to reach us before deadline.

Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.
