The Hans Christian Andersen Center, Department for the Study of Culture at the University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position to be filled by 1 January 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Affiliation
The postdoc position is affiliated with the research project “Hans Christian Andersen as World Literature”, which is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and led by Associate Professor Torsten Bøgh Thomsen at the Hans Christian Andersen Centre. The project’s researchers investigate the global dissemination of the Hans Christian Andersen’s works using perspectives related to world literature and critical heritage studies.
More information on the research project can be found at the following link:
https://dff.dk/en/grants/research-leaders-2021/researchleader-36?set_language=en
Job content
The postdoc is expected to conduct an individual research project. The proposed project should address questions pertaining to critical inquiry into the receptions of the authorship of the Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen in Asian cultural settings. The postdoc is responsible for designing the specific framework of the study including the combination of theoretical perspectives and culture(s) investigated. The proposed project may be a national study in the reception of Andersen in one Asian country, but we also encourage comparative studies between countries as well as proposals rooted in post-national perspectives. Likewise, we welcome non-western perspectives from fields such as Literary History, Comparative Literature, World Literature, Area Studies, Cultural Studies or a combination thereof.
The postdoc will take part in the project’s research group and in collective research and outreach activities. It is a requirement that the postdoc resides in Denmark during the employment period. An office space will be provided at the Hans Christian Andersen Center, located in the heart of the city of Odense.
Qualifications
Candidates are required to have obtained a relevant PhD within the last four years prior to employment. Several types of leave of absence are taken into consideration and deducted when calculating PhD age. These include, but are not limited, to parental leave (where the number of weeks should be multiplied by two), sick leave, leave related to humanitarian work and care work as well as military service.
Preferred qualifications include a strong publication record in English; knowledge of and/or experience with relevant theoretical frameworks such as World Literature, Cultural Studies, Critical Heritage Studies or Sociological Literary Studies.
If you have any questions concerning your PhD age, qualifications or research proposal please do not hesitate to contact Associate Professor Torsten Bøgh Thomsen at [email protected]
If you are not a Danish speaking applicant, please make sure to enter the electronic application form via the English website to receive further information in English.
Application, salary and conditions of employment
The employment as postdoc is temporary (2 years). Employment stops automatically by the end of the period. An upgrade of pedagogical qualifications is not part of the position. Thus, employment as postdoc cannot stand alone as a qualification for later employment as associate professor/senior researcher.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019 (the document only exists in Danish) https://www.retsinformation.dk/eli/retsinfo/2019/9629 Please check links for further information on salary https://www.SDU.dk/en/om_SDU/international_staff/on+arrival/salary/salary+rates and tax https://www.SDU.dk/en/om_SDU/international_staff/on+arrival/taxation
The application must include:
Only material in English, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish will be assessed. Please always include a copy of original diploma/certificates.
Please attach one pdf-file for each publication. For any collective publication or publication with a co-author, a co-author statement must be submitted as part of the pdf-file. The publications selected must be uploaded as attachments. We only accept files in pdf-format no more than 10 MB per file. In case you have more than one file per field you need to combine the pdf-files into a single file, as each field handles only one file. We do not accept zip-files, jpg or other image files. All pdf-files must be unlocked and allow binding and may not be password protected.
Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee and the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the Head of Department who will assemble an appointments committee. An interview may form part of the overall assessment of the applicants’ qualifications. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.
If the application does not meet the requirements mentioned above, the Faculty of Humanities may reject your application without further notice. Applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.
Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process. Please note that only a shortlisted applicant will receive an assessment.
Applications should be sent electronically via the link “apply online” and the Faculty expects applicants to read the information “How to apply” before applying.
We recommend that as an international applicant you take the time to visit Working in Denmark where you will find information and facts about moving to, working and living in Denmark, as well as the International Staff Office at SDU.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
