The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark (Campus Odense) invites applications for one or two PhD scholarships in Teaching Mathematics / STEM teaching with a focus on Mathematics. The successful applicant would become part of the Research Centre for Science Education and Communication (FNUG), and if relevant will also be affiliated to Laboratory for STEM Education and Learning, and Centre for Primary and Lower Secondary Education.
The proposed starting date is 1 September 2022 or soon thereafter. The appointment will be made for a term of three years and will follow the PhD study programme at the Faculty of Science and have an enrolment in the Science and Mathematics Education and Communication Research Training Programme. Application deadline: 7 June 2022.
The ideal candidate has a background in or experience with one or more of the following topics:
- Research on Teaching Mathematics at Secondary Level
- Research on Teaching Mathematics at Tertiary Level
- STEM as an interdisciplinary approach to teaching Mathematics
- Mathematical Reasoning and Inquiry Based Learning
- Modelling as a boundary object in Math/Science Teaching
- History of Mathematics
- Creativity and Mathematics
- Qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
- Design-based research methodology
- Action-based research methodology
- Quality assessment, surveys and tests
- Teaching experience
- Science and Technology Studies.
The successful candidate will formulate his/her own research project to match and compliment the ongoing research of the research centre. This includes funded projects such as LabSTEM (Novo Nordisk Foundation and Region Syddanmark), CCN (Connected Classroom Nordic), as well as internal funding and projects on themes of science communication, learner experience design and citizen science.
The applicant is expected to hold a relevant MSc degree in Mathematics or another field that provides a sufficient background in mathematics. Fluency in English is required.
MSc candidates about to complete will also be considered and should attach a statement from their supervisors regarding their impending completion. Applications for a 4+4 PhD programme are also welcome.

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three (students who have completed their MSc) or four years (students who have not yet completed their MSc). Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).
