The Mandrup group at the Functional Genomics & Metabolism Research Unit, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications from outstanding postdoctoral candidates who are interested in joining our group to investigate functional genomics of human adipocyte differentiation and to link genome variation to function. We are particularly interested in candidates with a mixed experimental and computational background. The fellowship is part of the Human Gene Regulation Map project within the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease and is available from 1 September 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease is a new Novo Nordisk Foundation funded effort seeking to build comprehensive maps of gene regulation in the human genome for uncovering biological mechanisms on common cardiometabolic diseases. The centre combines recent advances in genomics, molecular biology, single-cell analyses, and stem cell models with approaches in computational biology and machine learning to identify fundamental rules of gene regulation. Susanne Mandrup is one of the Danish partners in this centre.

The Mandrup Group

The Mandrup Group has a long-standing interest in understanding the molecular crosstalk between transcriptional regulation and metabolism in adipocytes and pancreatic β-cells and to understand the molecular basis for the plasticity of cells in the adipose tissue and endocrine pancreas. We also have a long-time interest in the transcriptional network regulating lineage determination and differentiation of adipocyte progenitors. Our laboratory combines genome-wide studies of factor binding, epigenetic marks, and chromatin structure with detailed molecular analyses of the crosstalk between transcriptional regulators. We run an inhouse sequencing platform including single cell sequencing and bioinformatic pipeline.

Susanne Mandrup is Director of Center of Excellence in Functional Genomics and Tissue Plasticity (ATLAS) and Center of Adipocyte Signaling (ADIPOSIGN).

Research project and environment
The project will investigate genome-wide functional and mechanistic aspects of transcriptional regulation in adipocytes. We will uncover basic mechanisms of regulatory elements in the genome in human adipocytes and during human adipocyte differentiation with the aim of linking all regulatory elements to their target promoters. Furthermore, we will determine how specific genome variants affect transcriptional regulation and phenotype of human adipocytes.

The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the group of Dr Melina Claussnitzer at the Broad Institute, and the postdoctoral fellow will benefit from the resources and training facilities at the Broad Institute. The work place will primarily be the Functional Genomics & Metabolism Research Unit, at Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, SDU, but the postdoctoral fellowship, may also involve research exchange to the Broad Institute.

The Functional Genomics & Metabolism Research Unit currently hosts seven independent research groups focusing on various aspects of gene regulatory mechanisms controlling cellular identity, differentiation and metabolism. The research unit constitutes an international, ambitious, highly dynamic, and well-equipped working environment. The unit and the department have state-of-the-art facilities for next generation sequencing, single-cell transcriptomics, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, metabolomics, bioimaging and transgenic mouse work. Strategic research alliances exist with Odense University Hospital (OUH).

Postdoc qualifications/requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated, dedicated, and ambitious candidate with:

  • A PhD degree in Life Science, preferably Molecular Biology, Biomedicine, or Computational Biology.
  • Experience with cell biology or NGS data analysis. Competence in transcriptional regulation would be an advantage.
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills and a desire to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
