The Section of Anthropology (ADBOU), Department of Forensic Medicine, invites applications for a position as associate professor or as tenure track assistant professor in biological/forensic anthropology and human osteology to be filled from September 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The candidate will be expected to initiate and conduct research and teaching and to supervise bachelor, master, and PhD students.
We are looking for candidates working with themes related to health, morbidity, and mortality in past populations from a demographic and epidemiological perspective. The position focuses on utilization of the skeletal collection at the University of Southern Denmark (ADBOU) for research, teaching, and outreach to the general population.
ADBOU aims to be recognized in Denmark and internationally as ‘the place to go’ for students and professionals in bioarchaeology and population history. Under guidance of the successful candidate for the position ADBOU seeks to organize research and studies that can attract the most talented biological anthropologists in the world.
The successful candidate will be part of this research unit team committed to the ambitions, obligations, and values of the University of Southern Denmark and make contributions to further development. ADBOU has developed a culture of cooperation, and the candidate will be expected to contribute to collaborative projects and exchange of ideas.

If appointment takes place as a tenure track assistant professor, the assistant professor will transfer to appointment as associate professor after a maximum of 6 years. Transition presupposes that the employee is assessed as professionally qualified for associate professor level.

- Research in population history based on archaeologically excavated skeletons for the skeletal collection.
- Development and documentation of scientific methods for skeletal analysis both in a historic and a forensic perspective.
- Active promotion of collaboration and exchange among research groups at SDU and around the world.
Tasks:
- In collaboration with close colleagues, to develop a research and funding strategy in human health history and population structure based on skeletal analyses.
- Teaching, supervision and examination of bachelor, master, and PhD students.
- To contribute to the development and course organization related to the biological anthropological analyses building on the evidence-based concepts of ADBOU.
The ideal candidate has:
- A PhD degree in anthropology, biology, medicine, or statistics
- Research experience related to the broad area of human biology and biological anthropology
- A documented record of teaching and supervision experience relevant to the above-mentioned study program
- Documented competences with course development and coordination
- Experience with and/or motivation for collaborating cultural heritage authorities, archaeological museums, and the police
