The Department of Technology and Innovation (ITI) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense, invites applications for a vacant position as Research Assistant in sensory and consumer science within SDU Innovation and Design section. The appointment as Research Assistant is for 18 months, with possibility of extension.

We are recruiting a research assistant with specializations in sensory science to strengthen our recently established sensory evaluation laboratory. The employment will take place in the Sustainable Food Innovation group which works broadly with sensory and consumer science with applications in food product development and optimization.

The position will entail research, education and knowledge transfer activities across sensory evaluation of foods primarily linked to two EU-funded projects: the SHEALTHY project, which focuses on sensory quality of fruit and vegetables processed with novel, non-thermal technologies, and the SEASONED project, which focuses on international capacity-building within sensory evaluation and consumer science.

The successful candidate is also expected to be collaborate on additional projects and be involved in teaching and other services department to a limited degree.

Tasks
The specific duties of the research assistant include (but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for running sensory analytical panels and consumer tests of foods and beverages;
  • Analyze data and present results to project partners and other stakeholders;
  • Participate in project meetings and staff exchange with other project partners;
  • Develop training material within sensory and consumer science for both academic and industrial audiences;
  • Collaborate in the publication of research outcomes in high quality scientific journals and books;
  • Work collaboratively with peers across the faculty and with private and public sector nationally and internationally.

Skills and qualificationsThe candidate shall have the following skills and qualifications:

  • Sc. in food science and technology, human nutrition or related areas;
  • Practical experience in conducting and planning sensory evaluation projects;
  • Experience in establishing and recruiting sensory descriptive panels and familiarity with relevant standards;
  • Proficiency in data analysis of sensory data and familiarity with relevant sensory software packages (e.g., PanelCheck, ConsumerCheck);
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary projects and international projects;
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision with a high degree of responsibility, and with the ability of managing multiple tasks;
  • Fluency in both Danish and English.

Since the successful candidate will also be expected to collaborate in the preparation of scientific publications, previous publication experience (especially as first author) will be considered an advantage. Previous experience with teaching and/or outreach activities will also be considered an advantage.

The employment will take place from 1st of October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Requirements for the position
The required qualification is graduate level.

Shortlisting may be used. Shortlisted applicants will be assessed by an assessment panel.

An interview might be part of the assessment process.

Conditions of employment
Employment as a research assistant is temporary. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

Employment is governed by the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
