Odense M

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applicants for a position as associate professor in astrophysics. Application deadline: 18 December 2022.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science, SDU, located in Odense. The department is responsible for the educations in chemistry and physics, as well as the bachelor education in pharmacy. The associate professor will be part of the Section for Physics. The physics section at the department is focused on basic research within the areas of fundamental physics, biophysics, and computational physics and is part of a broader SDU physics research environment across several faculties.

The ambition of the department is to carry out world-class research in fundamental theoretical physics and experimental physics. The selected applicant should expand and complement our current activities in, and at the interface of, gravity and astrophysics. Thus, we are seeking to appoint an associate professor who is internationally known and recognized within astrophysics. The ideal candidate leads an innovative and independent research programme, with broad or even interdisciplinary research scope, at the interface of gravity and astrophysics, for example black holes in astrophysical environments and gravitational waves in theoretical modelling, algorithmic development, and parameter estimation at the interface of theory and observational data.

The successful applicant will contribute to our educational programmes in physics. To strengthen the position of astrophysics at SDU, we are seeking an associate professor who will play an active and leading role in national and/or international collaborative projects and thereby strengthen SDU’s visibility in the research area.

Finally, the candidate must have a proven ability to publish at an internationally high level, potential to attract significant research funding within the Danish funding and international landscape. The ideal candidate should be an active member of the academic community, as evidenced through a track record of relevant activities and services.

Requirements and qualifications

  • PhD degree or Doctor of Science in physics.
  • Track record at high international level in astrophysics.
  • Teaching experience in physics.
  • Experience in leading successful teams of researchers.
