Expression of interest regarding the PhD Project “FIT FIRST FOR ALL: Nurturing motivation for sustained behavioural change”
The Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics invites expressions of interest to the aforementioned PhD position. The PhD student will be part of a team working on the project "FIT FIRST FOR ALL", recently co-financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Collaborators on this project include Prof. Peter Krustrup, Prof. Cecilie Thøgersen-Ntoumani and Professor Lars Breum. The PhD student will be affiliated with the Danish Centre for Motivation and Behaviour Science (DRIVEN) and the research unit for Sport and Health Sciences at SDU. The PhD position will run for 3 years, starting on 1 April 2023 or soon thereafter.
Project Description
FIT FIRST is a contemporary sports-based movement programme developed by Prof. Peter Krustrup and his research group to promote physical activity, fitness and well-being for children and youth in Danish schools (https://www.dif.dk/radgivning-og-stotte/mere-idraet-i-folkeskolen/fit-first). In a close collaboration between researchers, schools and sporting organizations, hundreds of lessons have been co-created using modified drills and games from 23 sports to offer fun, social, intense and impactful physical education for all, also children from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. In this project, the FIT FIRST programme will be expanded to cover the full school curriculum. A number of other methodological innovations will be tested in a series of studies. The PhD student will work under the supervision of Prof. Ntoumanis and his colleagues to augment the motivation and behaviour change aspects of FIT FIRST. The student will also work with other PhD students, postdocs and research assistants to collect various types of data related to the evaluation of FIT FIRST.
Qualifications
The successful applicant should have a relevant Master’s degree (cand.scient., cand.psyk, cand.scient.san, cand.med. or similar). Experience and training in psychology/behavioural science are highly desirable, as well as competence in writing in English (in order to publish the research). Good understanding of quantitative research methods is also desirable, as well as any prior experience in doing pertinent research with young people (in or outside schools). Given the nature of the project, which involve communication with teachers, pupils and other relevant stakeholders, the ability to speak Danish is important.

Following the identification of the preferred candidate, he or she will work with Prof. Nikos Ntoumanis to prepare the final project description. After approval of the project, the successful candidate will be asked to send an application to the PhD Secretariat, Faculty of Health Sciences, to be enrolled as PhD student. Further, the project will depend on confirmation of a scholarship at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark, which will cover one of the years of the studentship (funding for the other two years has already been secured).

- A statement explaining your interest, motivation and qualifications relevant to the PhD project (max. 1 page) - upload under “Application form”.
- Detailed curriculum vitae, including personal contact information
- A short (2-3 pages) outline of a potential PhD project focusing on potential research ideas and methods that could be used in the FIT FIRST project. The outline should include a preliminary specification of research aims together with argumentations for the relevance, theoretical and methodological approaches of the proposed project. Reference should be made to specific theoretical frameworks of motivation/behaviour change and past pertinent research. Furthermore, an overall timeline for the entire project period must be provided.
