Odense M

A fully financed three-year PhD position in theoretical/computational chemistry is available for a highly motivated applicant at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy (FKF) at the University of Southern Denmark starting from 1 January 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is financed through the Independent Research Fund Denmark – FNU. Application deadline: 15 November 2022.

Project Background

The research project will consist of - in roughly equal parts – theory/algorithm development and computational modelling within the cross field of theoretical/computational chemistry and molecular biophysics. The broad focus of the research project will be on studying electronic processes in complex and biological environments, and the developed methods will rely extensively on quantum mechanical formulations.

Specifically, the PhD candidate will develop and use biologically oriented computational and simulation techniques to unravel the molecular basis of optogenetics as well as develop rational design strategies for novel microbial rhodopsins possessing optical and mechanical properties for the benefit of the development of optogenetics as a tool to gain information concerning the function of the brain. The research project will be focused on the following three research aims:
1) Obtaining a molecular basis understanding of the working mechanisms in microbial rhodopsins when activated by light;
2) Development of rational design strategies for colour tuning of novel microbial rhodopsin variants; and
3) Development of rational design strategies for novel microbial rhodopsin variants that can be activated by multiphoton approaches.

To a high degree these research aims will be addressed based on quantum chemical embedding strategies and especially the so-called Polarizable Embedding (PE) and Polarizable Density Embedding (PDE) models.

The project is led by Professor Jacob Kongsted.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree or equivalent in theoretical (bio)physics, theoretical chemistry, applied computational science or related field. Furthermore, the candidate should show ability to work independently as well as have good communication skills. The candidate should have knowledge in one of the following programming languages: C/C++, Python or Fortran. Experience in computational chemistry/physics and/or biomolecular simulations is a prerequisite.

Note that this call is also open for students entering into a 4+4 PhD programme.

For further information contact Professor Jacob Kongsted, [email protected].

Application, salary etc.
Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three (students who have completed their MSc) or four years (students who have not yet completed their MSc).
