The Department of Technology and Innovation (ITI) at the Faculty of Engineering (TEK) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher in Urban Resilience within the UNESCO Chair on Urban Resilience (SDU.Resilience), at the Section for Civil and Architectural Engineering (CAE).
The PostDoc is a two-years position, with possibility of extension, and opportunities for further career progression, with research and teaching duties. Specifically, we are looking for a highly motivated and qualified candidate that can support our research on capacity building for urban resilience and to contribute to the development and delivery of our training programs for policy-maker and practitioners, in the frame of the International Urban Resilience Academy.
Research environment
SDU.Resilience is an expanding research team coordinated by Professor WSR on Urban Resilience Nicola Tollin, conducting transdisciplinary research, education and knowledge transfer activities on urban resilience at international level, with a strong network of academic and inter-governmental organizations partners worldwide.
SDU.Resilience investigates urban resilient transition, addressing systemically the causes and effects of climate change in cities, including climate change adaptation and mitigation, and other related major urban challenges: urbanization, pandemics and disaster risk reduction, in the wider frame of sustainable development.
Our research aims at informing and supporting policymaking at international and national level, and science-based urban planning and design for local action, both in the Global North and South.

Circular Economy and Built Environment

Green Infrastructures and Nature Based Solutions
SDU.Resilience established in 2019 the International Urban Resilience Academy aimed at developing and delivering capacity building for practitioners, policy-makers and researchers, in collaboration with over 30 organizations globally. IURA is organizing regularly training in Copenhagen, on-site and on-line, and is now expanding its activities with trainings at regional and national level to be organized globally.

Duties and responsibilities
The post-holder will contribute to further develop and expand research, education and knowledge transfer activities across the SDU.Resilience knowledge areas, with specific focus on Capacity Building for Climate Action.

Skills and qualifications
The candidate must have a PhD degree in urban resilience, capacity-building, urban planning, climate change, architecture, engineering or related areas. Transdisciplinary education pathways are highly appreciated.

Specific duties and responsibility of the Post Doc include to:
- Conduct research on capacity building on urban resilience;
- Develop and deliver training courses and programs for practitioners, policy makers and researchers, within the International Urban Resilience Academy;
- Publish research outcomes in high quality scientific journals, reports and books;
- Actively participate in attracting external funds for the development of research training activities, from national and international donors;
- Supervise and support the professional development of students and junior staff;
- Maintain and expand the collaboration with URIT’s partner organizations internationally;
- Contribute on knowledge transfer on capacity building research, particularly in the frame of current activities, e.g. within UNFCCC and UNESCO;
- Contribute to deliver courses at BSc, MSc and PhD level;
- Work collaboratively with peers across the faculty and the university.
Skills and qualifications
The candidate must have a PhD degree in urban resilience, capacity-building, urban planning, climate change, architecture, engineering or related areas. Transdisciplinary education pathways are highly appreciated.
The candidate shall demonstrate:
- Research and publication record on urban resilience and capacity building.
- Experience in the development, organization and delivery of capacity building courses and trainings, specifically within urban resilience.
- International working experience, particularly in transdisciplinary and multi-cultural teams.
- Experience in preparing applications for funding at national and international level.
- Work experience in the Global South, particularly in a developing context, is an asset.
- Knowledge of other languages, particularly Spanish and French, is an asset.
- Experience of work and/or collaboration with international organizations, is highly desirable.
- Experience in teaching at BSc and MSc level is desirable.
