A combined position as professor in epidemiology (50%) and as leader of OPEN Registry and Statistics (50%) is vacant at the Department of Clinical Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and at Odense University Hospital (OUH), respectively.

The role as Head of Research at the Research Unit OPEN, the Department of Clinical Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is also vacant.

The position is for a 5-year period with the possibility of extension.

The academic position

The professor will be appointed at the Department of Clinical Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU.

The position will be within Epidemiology, and focus areas could include - yet are not limited to - strengthening and promoting research using data from national health registries to identify individuals at risk of chronic diseases through prediction models; moreover, to strengthen the testing and implementation of automatic data-driven predictive models and algorithms for screening and early detection of individuals at risk of disease, which implies implementation in both primary and secondary health care.

Transsectional research and collaboration will be expected.

Areas of responsibility

The professor will be responsible for research in epidemiology and register-based research using data from the national health registries to identify individuals at risk of chronic diseases through prediction models.

The professor will also be responsible for developing new strategies for collaboration with other key stakeholders in the areas of epidemiology based on national databases and for commitment to international collaborations, interdisciplinary research, science communication, and also the ability to lead a research group will be expected.

Additionally, the professor must teach and mentor postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduate students, as well as maintain and develop national and international contacts and secure funding. Participation in assessment work will be part of the position. Moreover, profiling this research area in the public eye will also be an important task.

Research activity, network and collaboration

The professor will be expected to increase research activity at the research unit and to expand collaboration with other researchers at hospitals in the Region of Southern Denmark, at SDU, in the rest of Denmark and abroad.

By mutual agreement, the Head of Research role at OPEN can also be part of the new professor's responsibility.

The clinical position

The Professor will be appointed as leader of OPEN Registry and Statistics at OPEN, OUH. In this position, the leader refers to the Head of OPEN.

Qualifications

The successful applicant has a PhD or equivalent post-graduate research qualifications and must be qualified as a professor in Epidemiology.

The preferred candidate

- has demonstrated skills and scientific achievements within epidemiology

- is able to motivate, supervise and has proven research management skills

- has good collaboration abilities in the research group in OPEN- has visions of how to further strengthen the research group in OPEN.

Danish is not required initially, but must be mastered at proficiency level C1, at the Common European Framework of References for Languages within the first 2 years of employment.

Employers

OUH is one of Denmark’s largest hospitals and the only one having all medical specialities collected under one roof. The hospital comprises the units in Odense, Svendborg and Nyborg, sharing the same board of directors. In total, the staff comprises about 11,000 people. (See Key Figures.)

A new university hospital is currently in the planning stage to be finished in 2024. The new hospital will be located adjacent to the current main campus of the University of Southern Denmark. This co-location of the two institutions is unique in Europe and will facilitate the cooperation between the clinical departments and the faculties of University of Southern Denmark.

The Department of Clinical Research comprises 45 research units based in departments at Odense University Hospital and The Mental Health Services in the Region of Southern Denmark. (For more information about the department’s research, please see SDU’s Research Portal.)

The department staff teach at all the programmes offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences, however, primarily in medicine. (Read more about the department and its key figures here.)

Salary and terms of employment

The successful applicant for the professor position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
