One PhD fellowship is available in the fields of History and Classical Studies, Department of Languages, Culture, History and Communication, University of Southern Denmark, starting September 1, 2023. This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to work within the project Responses to Imperialism in Roman Historical Writing funded by the Independent Research Fund, Denmark. The fellowship runs for three years. During the fellowship, the successful candidate is obliged to take up teaching and other dissemination activities, as well as delivering courses or other similar teaching modules corresponding in total to 30 ECTS.
The successful candidate holds an MA or similar qualifications in the fields of History, Classics or in Greek and Roman Philology. The fellowship is fully salaried and wage levels are excellent for PhD-students in Denmark (https://www.SDU.dk/en/om_SDU/international_staff/on-arrival/salary ) The candidate will work on Julius Caesar’s two historical texts: they will examine Caesar’s rhetorical strategies in The Gallic War with attention to Caesar’s justification of Roman expansionism, and then deliver a comparative analysis looking at continuities and discontinuities in Caesar’s defense of his conduct in The Civil War. The PhD candidate is expected to develop their own project along these lines within the framework of the collective project and to work in close cooperation with project leader Jesper Majbom Madsen, who will supervise the project, as well as with the rest of the project group (Rhiannon Ash (Oxford), Christopher Baron (Notre Dame), Josiah Osgood (Georgetown).
The candidate’s relevant skills for the post must be clearly documented in the submitted CV, otherwise applications will not be considered. The candidate should possess excellent academic and interpersonal skills and be able to communicate freely in English both orally and in writing (as the working language in the project is English and the dissertation must be submitted in English). There is also a requirement of a six month research visit to the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA, where the candidate will work together with Professor Luca Grillo.

Application, salary and conditions of employment etc. A PhD Fellowship is a three-year position. Employment ends automatically by the end of the period. The holder of the fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019 (the document only exists in Danish).
To qualify for a PhD position, you must have completed a relevant master's degree with a good assessment by the application deadline.

If the application does not meet the requirements mentioned above, the Faculty of Humanities may reject your application without further notice. Applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.

- A letter stating your specific interest, motivation and qualifications for the project in question (800 words)
