The Research Unit of Movement, Culture and Society (MoCS) at the Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics, located at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) Campus in Odense, invites applications for an outstanding scholar to appoint as associate professor in dance and movement practices from September 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position includes research, teaching and supervision at all levels as well as research dissemination.

Research Environment

MoCS investigates embodied experiences and movement practices in sports, health and performing arts as they are shaped by socio-cultural contexts. The researchers in the unit draw on approaches developed in the humanities and social sciences, especially phenomenology, ethnography and cultural analysis.

MoCS covers a diverse array of topics, such as cultural practices among elite and amateur athletes and dancers, skilled practices in lifestyle sports, the nature of musical expertise and embodied experiences in illness and disability. The researchers in the unit are part of several international research networks in the fields of phenomenology, philosophy of sports, cultural analysis, anthropology and sociology.

The Position

The candidate will be working with themes related to the topics mentioned above. As associate professor, the candidate will be expected to help form the future strategies for dance research at the department and to take an active part in the activities and research projects lead by MoCS.

Potential applicants will be expected to teach and supervise student projects in the programs offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences with a focus on both the undergraduate and the Master programs at the Department of Sports Sciences and Clinical Biomechanics. Undergraduate programs include different dance practices. The associate professor will take responsibility for one or two of these programs. Accordingly, a strong teaching portfolio in different dance practices, including for example community dance, Laban, creative dance activities and social dance forms, will be valued. The teaching languages are Danish and/or English.

Qualifications

We are looking for applicants holding a PhD degree with relevance for dance practices. Applicants with an interest in, and documented experience from any or all of the following, will be prioritized:

  • Dance scholarly research
  • Critical social and cultural analytical approaches towards dance and related movement practices like, for example, contemporary circus, physical performance, yoga or somatic practices
  • Ethnographical methodologies and/or interdisciplinary research methodologies integrating ethnography and phenomenology
  • Dance and wellbeing, dance and rehabilitation or dance and health
  • Documented experience from publishing in international journals
  • Experience and success with external funding (e.g. as co-applicant)
  • A strong record of teaching and mentoring in the fields of dance as mentioned above as well as formalized pedagogical and didactic qualifications and skills
