Odense M

POLIMA at the University of Southern Denmark seeks outstanding PhD candidates with specific interest and abilities within the research area ‘polaritons for chiral or quantum light sources’. The positions are available from 1 June 2023 or as soon as possible.

Successful candidates will conduct cutting-edge research on the above-mentioned topic, under the supervision of Profs. N. Asger Mortensen and Christos Tserkezis.

Applicants for the PhD positions should have a bachelor’s degree in natural or technical sciences and should have completed (or provide proof of imminent completion) a relevant master’s degree. Prior research on the research topics of POLIMA is appreciated but not a prerequisite.

Professor N. Asger Mortensen is head of POLIMA, which currently consists of two Associate Professors, one Assistant Professor, two Postdocs, four PhD students plus administrative staff to support the center. POLIMA is a Center of Excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation for the next 6 years; furthermore, several POLIMA researchers have attracted prestigious personal grants, e.g., VILLLUM INVESTIGATOR, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship and Sapere Aude.

POLIMA is located at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense – 1 hour 15 minutes by train from Copenhagen and Copenhagen Airport. University of Southern Denmark offers dedicated assistance and support with various practical, social, and legal aspects (housing, visa, administration, tax etc.), especially for international candidates through our international staff office (ISO) and the administrative staff at POLIMA.

The application material should include a letter of motivation, detailed CV, two recommendation letters (or the contact details of two references from whom recommendation letters can be requested), all relevant certificates and a list of publications with the candidate’s contribution described explicitly. Prior contact with any of the key investigators is highly recommended and should be described in the motivation letter.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

Assessment: Applications will be assessed by an expert. Shortlisting may be used. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the Faculty. An interview might be part of the assessment process.

Conditions of employment

Employment as a PhD is temporary. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

The Faculty determines the distribution of the various assignments. The weighting of the different assignments may vary over time.

In case you have more than one file per field you need to combine the pdf-files into a single file, as each field handles only one file.

Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb.

The applications must include:

  • Letter of motivation
  • A research proposal/description of your approach to the above project (max one page, excluding references)
  • Completed TEK PhD application form (Find the 5+3 form here)
  • Completed TEK PhD form for calculating grade point average. Upload in one of the fields called "publication" (find the TEK PhD forms here)
  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae,
  • 2 recommendation letters (or the contact details of two references from whom recommendation letters can be requested)
  • Certificates/Diplomas (MSc) - Danish or English transcript
  • List of publications with the candidate’s contribution described explicitly
  • An official document describing the educational structure and the grading scheme of the awarding universities
  • Examples of the most relevant publications (if available) and the applicant’s master thesis

Prior contact with any of the key investigators is highly recommended and should be
described in the motivation letter.
