Declaration of interest regarding PhD project:
The Department of Clinical Research at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is looking for applicants for a PhD position in the field of audiology. The position is available for three years from January 1st 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Research environment
The PhD student will be affiliated with the Research Unit of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology at SDU, which is divided into three sections: Surgically-related ENT, Medical Audiology, and Technical Audiology. The advertised position is available in the Technical Audiology section.
Project description
Otitis media (OM) is among the most common diseases in young children. Although the associated hearing loss usually resolves with time, studies have shown that recurrent OM during early childhood can have long-lasting negative effects on speech perception in noise. Research has indicated that these deficits reflect impaired binaural hearing, but the exact mechanisms remain unclear. Consequently, effective solutions for hearing diagnostics and rehabilitation are still lacking. To address these shortcomings, the proposed PhD project will systematically characterize the hearing abilities of OM children, relate them to physiological measures of hearing function and speech understanding in noise, and develop a hearing-aid processing strategy for their enhancement. This will provide a better fundamental understanding of the hearing deficits of OM children and new perspectives for rehabilitation strategies.
The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. It involves a collaboration between SDU (Profs. Tobias Neher & Lindsey Van Yper), KU Leuven, Belgium (Prof. Jan Wouters), and the Interacoustics Research Unit, Denmark (Dr. Søren Laugesen).
Qualifications
The position is suited for a person with a clear interest in both technical and clinical audiological work. Ideally, applicants for the position should possess the following qualifications:
