The Department of Language, Culture, History and Communication (ISKHK) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for two 3-year PhD scholarships within the newly established elite center PACA under the supervision of Patricia Wolf, Søren Askegaard and Bryan Yazell. The positions are located at SDU’s Campus in Odense and are vacant from 1st October or soon thereafter.

Job description
The eventual thesis will be integral part of the SDU Climate Elite Centre project “Mobilizing Post-Anthropocentric Climate Action: A New Root Narrative” (PACA). PACA seeks to map post-anthropocentric social theories that challenge the nature-culture divide and investigate traces of these theories in the population. It assesses the extent to which such practices and beliefs can provide a cohesive narrative for a new organization of production and consumption practices and, finally, the role of universities as mediators of the emergent post-anthropocentrism.

The PhD will contribute to surveying post-anthropocentrism(s) as part of the project’s overall development of a post-anthropocentric ontology in social movements, communities, and industries. PACA is based on the hypothesis that a conceptual shift towards a post-anthropocentric narrative can provide the imaginative basis for a different economy with different modes of production and consumption and to mobilize what has been termed the emergent ecological class (Latour and Schultz 2022).

The workload will be geared towards researching:

  • the terrain and post-anthropocentric narrative(s) of dominant actors in culture (e.g., art, literature, popular media), social movements, communities, and industries as well as
  • systemic intermediary strategies for universities to promote an effective post-anthropocentric narrative in society.

While both of these elements are central to the project, the focus of this PhD position is on post-anthropocentric narratives.

For further information regarding PACA, please contact associate professor Bryan Yazell ([email protected]), professor WSR Patricia Wolf ([email protected]) or professor Søren Askegaard ([email protected]). For general information, please contact Head of Department Per Krogh Hansen ([email protected]).

The successful candidates will be expected to complete a six-month stay at a research institution abroad and, over the period of the programme, to acquire experience of teaching or other types of presentation. S/he will also be expected to participate in the various activities within the center and – apart from the stay abroad – to be present on a daily basis.

Application, salary and conditions of employment etc. A PhD Fellowship is a three-year position. Employment ends automatically by the end of the period. The holder of the fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019 (the document only exists in Danish).
