SDU CREATE, part of the Department of Innovation and Technology, University of Southern Denmark, invites candidates to apply for available PostDoc or Assistant Professor positions. The job positions are to be filled as soon as possible and no later than January 2024.
Scope of the work
Focusing on computational design and digital fabrication, the successful candidates will carry out research and teaching in one or more focus areas (listed below) and collaborate on research projects that involve advanced computational modelling, robotic/digital fabrication, material innovation with applications in the field of architecture, engineering, and construction. The selected candidates will work in a high-paced interdisciplinary environment and become part of a fast-growing research center that adopts a design-driven approach. Research activities will be interlinked to the development of CREATE´s educational offering in the MSc and BSc programs in the field of Civil and Architectural Engineering.
About SDU CREATE´s research environment
CREATE is the center for Computational Research in Emergent Architectural Technology and Engineering led by Associate Professor Roberto Naboni. The Center is based at the Faculty of Engineering (TEK) of the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). Within the high-tech context of SDU, CREATE explores novel architectural ideas and engineering processes at the intersection with the fields of computational design, robotics/digital manufacturing, and materialization processes. The center looks into the fast-evolving landscape of emerging technologies to conceive future-oriented projects and sustainable construction concepts that respond to current and future challenges of the built environment. The center´s activities are predominantly carried out in the CREATE Lab, a state-of-the-art research facility for large-scale architectural robotics, additive manufacturing, mixed reality design, and construction and the SDU Industry 4.0 laboratory. The TEK Faculty hosts a rather unique mix of competencies and access to laboratorial facilities for structural and material testing, robotics and drones, rapid prototyping, extended reality, mechanical and electronics workshops (and many more).

CREATE focuses on experimental and interdisciplinary research enabled by the latest advancements in computational techniques and fabrication technology. Within the overall center´s research framework, the selected applicants will be ideally developing original research in one or more of the following scholarship areas:

Qualifications & Skills
Applications are accepted from exceptional candidates who hold (or are in the process of obtaining) a PhD degree relevant for the above-described research areas, including but not limited to architecture and building engineering. The candidates must document their track records in: (i) internationally relevant peer-reviewed publications; (ii) development of advanced projects involving computational design/engineering, robotic/digital fabrication and construction, innovative material developments/testing; (iii) teaching and supervision experience at university level. English proficiency (oral + written) is expected. Given the scope of work, the selection process will prioritize technically advanced individuals with advanced knowledge of Grasshopper, and demonstrated skills in at least one of the following areas:

Conditions of employment
The postdoc position is for 2 years. Employment as a postdoc requires scientific qualifications at PhD level. Employment as a postdoc is temporary and will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
Employment as an assistant professor requires scientific qualifications at PhD level and is a 3-year temporary position and will cease without further notice at the end of the period. The selected candidates will be enrolled in the Lecturer Training Programme at SDU.

- Advanced architectural geometry.
- Architectural robotics, collaborative robotics, robot sensing.
- Design and fabrication with large-scale Additive Manufacturing (including 3DCP, FDM).
- Design and fabrication for Robotic Timber Construction and Assembly.
- Wood- and bio-based fabrication processes and construction.
- Agent-based Modeling and Machine Learning for design/engineering.
- Extended Reality (VR+MR) for design and construction.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will proactively participate in developing the CREATE's research, teaching and laboratory developments. The responsibilities include:
- Developing cutting-edge research in the fields of Computational Design and Digital Fabrication.
- Development of SDU CREATE’s research projects, providing support in design/engineering developments including digital construction activities.
- Development of digital tools and computational workflows within the research area(s), in support of the center’s activities, and in relation to specific research and innovation projects.
- Teaching at master's and bachelor's level courses, studios and workshops, co-supervising thesis students and interns in research activities.
- Disseminating results of research and teaching in peer-reviewed publications, international conferences, prizes, exhibitions, and through the center´s website and social media platforms.
- Contributing to the development, organization, and expansion of the Center and its laboratory infrastructures.
- Supporting the center´s engagement with key industrial and academic partners, nationally and internationally.
Qualifications & Skills
