The academic position

The Unit of Neurobiology Research, Department of Molecular Medicine, invites applications for a full-time associate professor position in neuroscience. The position is expected to be filled from 1 December 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We seek individuals who have research expertise that complement existing focus areas of the department.

Major research areas of the unit are stem cells and glial biology with relevance to clinical and experimental studies of demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease.

The associate professor will be responsible for initiating, supervising, and publishing research and to be the daily leader of a research group focusing on neuroscience at IMM.

Qualifications

We seek candidates with a PhD and educational background in medicine or a related biomedical field and with proven postdoctoral training, Lecturer training programme (or equivalent), supervising experience and with ability to attract funding and proven significant research through publications.

Teaching commitments

The candidate will be expected to deliver dynamic education, primarily at the undergraduate level for bachelor students in Medicine, Biomedicine and Clinical Biomechanics taught at SDU.

The successful applicant will hold course responsibility and teach preferentially neurobiology and neuroanatomy and also in related fields to medical, BSc and MSc students at courses provided by the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Teaching duties can include development of courses including postgraduate courses. Teaching at a high academic level is viewed as a core competence necessary for the applicant to fulfill or develop depending on entry level and prior qualifications. The candidate will be expected to participate in mentoring graduate and PhD students pursuing their Master’s degree and PhD. The unit uses touch screens, group teaching, podcasts and interactive approaches.

Research profile and tasks

The successful candidate will bring a research portfolio within areas of research that supplement and expand existing strengths within experimental neuroscience and neuroimmunology. The successful candidate will hold a strong publication record within experimental, translational or basic neuroscience research. Close collaborations will be expected within the department, and with the nearby Odense University Hospital (OUH). OUH is the main hospital in the region (population of 1,5 million) responsible for diagnoses and treatments within all clinical areas. Establishment of strong international collaborations of benefit to the unit as well as to the department will be expected as well. Participation in assessment work and other faculty duties will be part of the position. Moreover, profiling this research area in the public eye will be an important task.

Research infrastructure with new labs, and state-of-the-art core facilities within flow cytometry, imaging, transcriptomics and animal models will be available. Ability to secure external funding is crucial for the research.

The research units

IMM has approximately 180 employees: Approximately 30 tenured researchers, Phd students and postdocs and +30 technical staff. It consists of three closely collaborating and cohabitating research units: Cancer&Inflammation; Cardiovascular&Renal and Neurobiology. Additionally, IMM collaborates with Odense University Hospital and hosts ca 130 staff from OUH that perform lab based research.

IMM researchers deliver teaching at several academic educations: Medicine, Pharmacy, Clinical Biomechanics, Health Technology, Audiologopedia and Biomedicine.
