Are you a seasoned researcher in marine ecology looking to push the boundaries of interdisciplinary research in biodiversity and ecosystem services? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Department of Biology. We are seeking an enthusiastic postdoc to join us for a two-year stint on an impactful project focused on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
In this role, you will contribute significantly to the assessment and quantification of ecosystem services, with a distinct focus on biodiversity-related ecosystem services, management, governance, and the co-production of knowledge through deep stakeholder integration. Collaboratively, you will be expected to engage in fieldwork with other members of our ambitious Blue4All consortium, addressing key research questions related to ecosystem services. Your efforts will extend to facilitating stakeholder workshops aimed at developing and validating socio-ecological tools, with the ultimate goal of improving MPA designation and management processes.
As part of the Horizon Europe-funded “Blue4All: Blueprint demonstration for co-created effective, efficient, and resilient networks of MPAs” project, you will work closely with Associated Professor Cintia O. Quintana, along with other renowned researchers at the department and within the Blue4All project consortium.
Role Overview:
As the postdoc for the Blue4All project, you will focus on marine conservation and restoration challenges in Europe, proposing innovative approaches to MPAs that align with the EU Biodiversity Strategy and national initiatives. The project emphasizes stakeholder involvement, working with stakeholders from various sites and living labs in the Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea, and North-East Atlantic regions.
Your responsibilities will include supporting the testing and validation of socio-ecological and environmental tools in the living labs. Specifically, you will concentrate on gathering data associated with these tools and investigating environmental challenges linked to the balance between use and protection of the Wadden Sea, our living lab located in Denmark.
Candidate Profile:
We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in biology, ecology, environmental studies, political science, or sociology with an environmental emphasis, environmental/resource economics, or similar. Experience with climate or biodiversity topics, coastal habitats, or ecosystem service assessments is highly desirable. Proficiency in areas like biodiversity of flora and fauna, ecosystems ecology, environmental sociology, stakeholder engagement and integration, R-coding, GIS, and mapping software will be beneficial.
Our Department:
The Department of Biology at SDU is a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment of approximately 170 employees, conducting a wide range of research within diverse biological fields. Our work is organized into five research groups, each focusing on unique disciplines and biological areas. Our research employs state-of-the-art technology, methodologies, and facilities in a disciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to address scientifically and societally relevant biological questions at local, regional, and global scales.

Starting date: 1 December 2023 (or soon after). Application deadline: 30 September 2023.
