The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark (Campus Odense) invites applications for a PhD scholarship in computer science funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, Research Project 1 “CLEVR”. The successful applicant would become part of the Data Science & Statistics research group.
The proposed starting date is 1 January 2024 or soon thereafter. The appointment will be made for a term of three years at a competitive salary and will follow the PhD study programme at the Faculty of Science.
The ideal candidate has a background in or experience with one or more of the following topics:
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of advanced evaluation and model selection methodology for unsupervised clustering in a focused basic research project. This project proposes to revisit the common practice of clustering evaluation and to develop new techniques for the selection of methods and parameters for a clustering problem without the availability of guiding ground truth. The purpose of the proposed investigation is to improve (a) the evaluation practice in scientific research on clustering methods, and (b) the practical usability of clustering methods for scientists, engineers, and other researchers applying quantitative analysis in humanities and business contexts, or more broadly for any user of clustering methods for data analysis.
The applicant is expected to hold a relevant MSc degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Statistics or another field that provides a sufficient degree of background in computer science, mathematics, statistics, and/or data science. Fluency in English and Python are required. Experience working with health data and programming experience with other languages (Java, C++ etc.) is a plus.
MSc candidates about to complete will also be considered and should attach a statement from their supervisors regarding their impending completion. The cover letter should elaborate on the fit of the candidate’s profile and experience to the requirements of the project.
