Odense M
We are looking for a one-year postdoc with experience in microfluidics to join our mission to make artificial spider silk as an environmentally friendly alternative. The postdoc position would result in a microfluidic chip prototype that can create high quality artificial spider silk. The position is to commence 1 October 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. Application deadline: 12 September 2023.
This postdoctoral position is a collaborative effort between the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Kgs. Lyngby. Although the successful candidate will be officially affiliated with SDU, the first half of the appointment, spanning six months, will be predominantly based at DTU. During this period, you will work closely with a dedicated research assistant at DTU Bioengineering, in Winnie Svendsen’s laboratory. Here you will be using COMSOL™ Physics to simulate microfluidic chips for artificial spider silk fabrication. The chips will be fabricated and tested by you and the research assistant at DTU Bioengineering.
The subsequent six months of the postdoc position will be centred at SDU in Odense, working with Jonathan Brewer. This phase of the project will focus on tuning the silk production to obtain specific mechanical properties. The work will be done by combining characterization of the artificial silk using advanced microscopy techniques and mechanical testing to optimize microfluidic chip and flow design.
The project is done in collaboration with Irina Iachina at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, so if needed visits to MIT might have to be undertaken.
Beyond the cutting-edge research experience, the job will offer many networking opportunities with world leading scientific laboratories. As the purpose of the project is to create a functional prototype for a start-up this job can also offer a view into the world of start-ups and a possible job at the created start-up.
Requirements:
If you are an ambitious researcher interested in making a substantial impact at the intersection of microfluidics and environmentally sustainable materials, we encourage you to apply and become a part of our team seeking to redefine the possibilities of artificial spider silk production and making a greener future.
For further information please contact Associate Professor Jonathan R. Brewer, e-mail: [email protected].
Application, salary etc.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
The application must include the following:
• A motivated letter of application (max. one page).
• A curriculum vitae including information on previous employment.
• Copies of PhD certificate and Master of Science certificate. If the PhD has not yet been completed, a written statement from the supervisor will do.
• A full list of publications stating the scientific publications on which the applicant wishes to rely.
Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.
Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.
To qualify you must have passed a PhD or equivalent. Applications will be assessed by an expert assessor/committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
Applications must be submitted electronically using the link "Apply online". Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb. We strongly recommend that you read How to apply before you apply.
