We seek applicants for a research-based PhD position on the topic of Embodied cognition in language and social interaction. The position will be based at the Centre for Human Interactivity, a research unit within the Department of Culture and Language at the University of Southern Denmark. The candidate will be based at SDU’s Odense campus. The position will be supervised by Dr Edward Baggs and by Professor Sune Vork Steffensen.
The position is available starting 1 February 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
The Centre for Human Interactivity specializes in research on language, cognition, and social interaction in real world settings. Researchers work within the framework of embodied cognition and make use of diverse methods, including ethnographic, theoretical, and experimental approaches. Candidates are expected to outline a research project. In the application you should specify the methodological approach(es) you are interested in using. Examples of relevant topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Eligibility: The scholarship is open to promising candidates from any country. The candidate should ideally have a first degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. psychology, anthropology, philosophy, linguistics) and should be able to explain their interest in studying social interaction within the framework of embodied cognition.
Award: The position is fully funded for a fixed term of three years. The scholar’s tuition fees are covered and the candidate will receive a salary consistent with conditions set out in the existing national-level collective agreement for PhD workers. For a full-time PhD student, this amounts to a monthly salary of approximately 31,000 DKK (4,550 USD). For more information on being a PhD student at SDU see the pages here.

A PhD Fellowship is a three-year position. Employment ends automatically by the end of the period. The holder of the fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019 (the document only exists in Danish).
To qualify for a PhD position, you must have completed a relevant master's degree with a good assessment by the application deadline.

An interview may form part of the overall assessment of the applicants' qualifications. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.
If the application does not meet the requirements mentioned above, the Faculty of Humanities may reject your application without further notice. Applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.
Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process. Please note that only a shortlisted applicant will receive an assessment.
