The Department of Biology at SDU invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in aquatic microbial ecology and biogeochemistry. The position is offered for two years with possibility for extension. Application deadline: 7 November 2023.
As oxygen concentrations are declining in the ocean, oxygen depleted “dead zones” are expanding, and anoxic events are increasing in frequency, and a mechanistic understanding of element cycling in oxygen-depleted waters is needed. The position will contribute to our ongoing efforts to unravel the pathways, dynamics, and conveyors of microbial carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycling in oxygen depleted waters, and how these are affected by environmental change.
A main research objective for this position will be to link specific microbial nitrogen transformations, including the production and consumption of the potent greenhouse gas N2O, to the specific organisms that convey these processes. This combines experimental incubation of natural water samples using stable isotope tracing, and microbial community analysis with, e.g., metagenomic and -transcriptomic or other state-of-the-art approaches. Participation in international research cruises and cruises in Danish waters is an integral part of the position.
We seek a candidate with a background in microbial or molecular biology, (bio-)geochemistry, or related fields, and with experience in field work and microbial community analysis, preferably including bioinformatics. The selected candidate will be part of the diverse and international Nordcee group at the department and will have the opportunity to collaborate internationally with project associates at the University of Gothenburg, Montana State University, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
For further information please contact Professor Bo Thamdrup, [email protected].
Application, salary etc.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
The application must include the following:
• A curriculum vitae including information on previous employment.
• A full list of publications stating the scientific publications on which the applicant wishes to rely.
Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.
Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.
To qualify you must have passed a PhD or equivalent. Applications will be assessed by an expert assessor/committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
Applications must be submitted electronically using the link "Apply online". Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb. We strongly recommend that you read How to apply before you apply.
