Søborg

Ferrosan Medical Devices A/S develops and produces a portfolio of hemostatic products to aid surgery and minimize bleeding challenges (Surgiflo®). The products are registered as medical devices (Class III) and are sold internationally in more than 100 countries in close collaboration with the main customer and innovation partner, Ethicon, part of Johnson & Johnson.

All main functions in the company are in Søborg, DK, including production facilities, so everyone sits door to door with easy access to each other.

The Product Innovation department
Ferrosan Medical Devices is working on several innovation projects to address new surgical needs. These projects explore trends and new concepts in a growing market with a changing surgical setting toward robotics and minimally invasive surgery.

The Product Innovation department is involved primarily in the explorative, concept research phase until the design lock. Still, it is also involved at different stages in the development phase, spanning concept development to production. We are discovering and developing new devices and formulations assigned to classes II and III for surgical use within hemostatic and leaks, addressing end-user needs.

The department consists of a highly skilled team of 11 scientists, engineers, and technicians who cover a wide range of scientific and technical disciplines, such as chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical science, process engineering, design research, and prototyping.

The department houses three laboratories, a machine shop, and a pilot facility. Instrumentation includes enzymatic activity assays, coagulation assays, UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR microscopy, DSC, adhesion/cohesion, rheology, mechanical test systems, texture analysis, mechanical processing, 3D printing, and pilot-scale processing equipment.

You will join a research project team working on an advanced hemostat formulation and delivery system. The team of 8 FTEs consists of biochemists, pharmaceutical scientists, design researchers, and regulatory specialists. You will complement the team with your know-how and experience in dry powder/granulate formulation processes, scalability, manufacturability, COGS calculations, and technology transfer processes.

The Product Innovation department is placed under New Business Development, and you report to the Product Innovation Director.

We are looking for an R&D Scientist to work on a project involving new formulations and contributing to new processes from pilot scale to production. You should be familiar with early-phase projects and the unknown with an exploratory mindset. Ideally, you also have some experience with submissions to the FDA/EMA.

Your role
From the start, you will be allocated an early innovation project regarding a new formulation for surgical devices. This project includes new processes from lab scale to pilot scale to eventual manufacturing.

The project involves formulations and APIs to penetrate new surgical areas. We are evaluating some candidates containing active ingredients to determine the project’s direction.

You will participate in exploring and discovering new technology relevant to combination devices with biomaterial and biologically active components as the main components of our products.

These combination products present interesting challenges when developing new formulations and devices.

In this role, you will use your scientific curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving nature daily.

Your role will include:

  • Develop and implement new pharmaceutical processes.
  • Ensure manufacturability, including the incorporation of APIs in formulations and processes.
  • Conduct scale-up trials to move formulations from lab to production.
  • Test formulation/device combinations to ensure compatibility and functionality according to the target product profile.
  • Design and run experiments to test new drug formulations.
  • Analyze data from trials to optimize process parameters.
  • Document experimental procedures and results.
  • Communicate results to the project team.
  • Take the lead on project tasks and secure alignment of task progress with the overall project plan.
  • Participate in technology scouting.
  • Participate in projects cross-functionally.
  • Contribute to idea generation, opportunity assessments, and concept development in pre-projects.
  • Inspire and contribute to the department’s scientific and innovative competencies.

The ideal candidate
You have an R&D scientist/engineer background and experience with process development, piloting, and tech transfer. You have hands-on experience with pharmaceutical engineering, such as CMC, solid dose, formulation chemistry, and protein chemistry. You are used to working in project teams and enjoy this.

You plan your work and focus on deadlines in close collaboration with laboratory technicians and experimental scientists. You are particular and structured in your work and deliver high-quality documentation when reviewing colleagues’ protocols/reports.

You navigate comfortably in a complex project environment and actively contribute to creating clarity and direction with your project teammates.

You are a collaborative team player who can navigate dynamic and creative processes in a flat organization with many cross-functional stakeholders.

In addition, your profile contains:

  • Academic background: master’s or Ph.D. degree in life sciences (such as pharmacy, chemistry, protein chemistry, or similar)
  • Industry experience.
  • General experience with pharmaceutical processes and production techniques.
  • Experience with scalability and manufacturability, such as active ingredients and excipients.
  • Experience with Submissions to FDA/EMA.
  • Knowledge of formulation development and proteins.
  • Understanding properties, interactions, and effects on stability in manufacturing.
  • Understanding of Aseptic Processing and production costs.
  • General knowledge of laboratory techniques and engineering principles for pharmaceutical development and manufacturing.
  • Science curiosity, solution-orientated, and pragmatic approach.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a self-starting collaborative personality.
  • Ability to put own work into a cross-functional reference.
  • Strong oral/written communication skills.
