The Centre NanoSYD at The Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in nanofluid characterization with emphasis on microfluidic cooling systems. The starting date for the position is March 1, 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter. The application deadline is November 30, 2020.

The PhD project
The increase in heat transfer rate in various applications and devices calls for new ways of efficient device cooling to increase their reliability and efficiency. Suspensions of dispersed nanoparticles in common fluids and refrigerants, so-called ‘nanofluids’, offer a high potential for controlling the heat transfer and increasing heat exchange efficiency. In particular, nanofluids are suited for small-volume cooling devices based on microfluidic chips as well as porous materials. However, the stability of nanofluids is still a limiting factor which decreases their efficiency in engineering applications. Accumulation at the walls and agglomeration among particles are common issues caused by interactive forces, which effect the dispersion, rheology, and overall performance of those suspensions. Hence, knowledge about the interaction of nanomaterials with the liquid is of fundamental importance.

The PhD position is centered around studying experimentally fundamental processes of nanofluid multi-phase flow in model microfluidic systems. Nanofluid fabrication, high-resolution Helium ion microscopy, dynamic light-scattering particle characterization and other microscopy techniques will be used for that at NanoSYD in Sønderborg. In addition, it is intended to implement time-resolved neutron imaging at the European Spallation Source (ESS), located in Lund/Sweden. Neutron imaging is an ideal tool for visualizing nanofluid multi-phase flow, particularly to investigate the boiling mechanism in terms of bubble dynamics because of the high interaction cross-section of neutrons with liquids. Experimental work is to be combined with numerical modelling of fluid dynamics.

Tasks
  • Fabrication of microfluidic heat sink systems
  • Preparation of nanofluids
  • Optical characterization of nanofluids, e.g., with dynamic light scattering and dark field microscopy
  • Device characterization with Helium ion beam microscopy to image particle sedimentation
  • Preparation of devices for imaging at ESS and, if applicable, first neutron imaging studies
  • Numerical modelling of nanofluids multi-phase flow in microfluidic systems

What we offer
The PhD fellow will work in a trans-disciplinary team dedicated to micro- and nanoscience. We offer an international and stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment for conducting research of high quality.

What we expect
  • Master’s degree in natural sciences or engineering (equivalent to a Danish master's degree)
  • Specialisation or experience in at least one of the following fields: thermo-fluid science, nanotechnology, microfluidics, neutron imaging
  • Preferably, experience in modelling fluid dynamics
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written
  • Comfortable to work both independently and within a team
  • Good collaboration and communication skills

Research environment
The successful candidates will be affiliated with the nanoscience centre NanoSYD at the Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark which is located at the Faculty of Engineering on the international campus in Sønderborg, Denmark.

The project is related to research activities at the recently established Centres for Industrial Electronics and Industrial Mechanics and will involve close cooperation with the vibrant industrial environment in the cross-border region Denmark-Germany.

The work is funded by SOLID, a Danish national lighthouse cluster in the field of hard materials. At the cluster, cutting-edge research in 3D imaging, image analysis and modelling is performed, with the intention to include future neutron imaging at the European Spallation Source in Lund/Sweden.
