Sønderborg

We are an international research group working in the field of thin film solar cells (OPV group at SDU NanoSYD), which are looking for a highly motivated postdoc to join our research team at University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Sønderborg. The specific research topic for the postdoc position is metal oxide thin films for all-oxide solar cells. The position is available earliest from April 2021, for a 2 years period with the possibility of extension.

The postdoc position(s) is a part of a new national project supported by the Independent Research Fund Denmark within the thematic research areas of Green Transition – powering the Internet of Things. The project is carried out in close collaboration between DTU, SDU, Berkeley Lab and MIT and we hope that you might want to join the project?

The overall project objective is to develop a new family of miniaturized energy sources, able to harvest and store energy from a combination of heat, mechanical vibrations and light in a single device. We expect to develop and understand a radically new family of all-solid-state micro-energy devices, able to harvest and store energy simultaneously for the use in sensors for the IoT.

In addition to this postdoc, three PhD students will be working in parallel on the project at the leadpartner DTU, under supervision of Prof. Nini Pryds, Prof. Vincenzo Esposito and Dr. Dennis Valbjørn Christensen.

We seek a postdoc candidate for synthesis of metal oxide thin films using reactive sputtering and pulsed laser deposition (PLD) processes, to develop all-oxide thin film photovoltaic (PV) devices for the IoT. A focus will be on controlling e.g. microstructure, chemical composition and interfaces during the metal oxide thin film growth process to tune work functions, carrier concentrations, energy level alignment etc. The work includes synthesis and integration of metal oxide electron and hole transport layers, as well as of active absorber layers. Tandem devices will be developed, and the work will include surface science characterization of the individual layers along with the full device characterization.

At the Organic Photovoltaics (OPV) group lead by Professor WSR Morten Madsen at SDU NanoSYD, SDU campus Sønderborg, the focus is on development of thin film photovoltaic devices with improved performance, by studying in detail all the involved materials, thin films andtheir interfaces in thesolar cell devices. The group has full access to an ISOS5 cleanroom, a surface science laboratory facility for the full preparation and characterization of thin films and devices, and a roll-to-roll facility for thin film and device upscaling.

As a postdoc you are expected to develop and carry out your own ideas, and communicate scientific results in leading, high-ranked research journals. We offer fully funded postdoc position(s) for the duration of minimum two years.

Candidates who have a previous PhD degree in a field relevant to the mentioned project may seek the position. Preferred candidates have: a strong background in applied physics/materials science, experience in metal oxide thin film growth by sputtering and pulsed laser deposition, experience in fabrication and testing of electrical thin film devices and materials. Candidates are expected to hold relevant publications on these topics. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, the candidate(s) is expected to have excellent collaboration skills. A very good capability of communicating scientific results in English, both orally and in writing is required. Research visits at the collaborating partners should be expected.
