Professor/Associate Professor in translation with a focus on translation technology

About the position

A permanent 100% position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Humanities and Education, as Professor/Associate Professor in translation with a focus on translation technology. The position is located at Campus Kristiansand. The starting date is negotiable with the Faculty.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Translation has approximately 35 academic/research positions and about 300 students currently enrolled in study programmes in Translation and Intercultural Communication, English, French, German and Spanish. The department’s teaching portfolio includes first-year studies, Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, teacher education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, postgraduate certificate in education, as well as doctoral programmes in linguistics and literature. The Bachelor's programme in Translation and Intercultural Communication will be phased out and replaced by a Master’s programme in Translation and Professional Communication over the coming three years.

Responsibilities

The Professor/Associate Professor will be expected to take part in teaching and supervision with a focus on translation technology for MA students, and for BA students until this programme has been phased out. He/she will also be expected to be involved in the continuous development of the MA programme in general, and courses involving translation technology in particular.

Specific requirements are:

  • A PhD in Translation Studies or a related field, with a focus on translation technology
  • A solid research record in the field of translation studies, preferably with an emphasis on translation technology
  • The working language at the University of Agder is Norwegian. A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English is required. The University of Agder offers Norwegian language courses to international employees with little or no knowledge of Norwegian and facilitates participation in such courses. Permanently employed staff are expected to have learnt Norwegian within a period of two years, and this is to be documented by passing the Bergenstest.

If there are no applicants to the position who are clearly qualified for permanent employment, a temporary appointment may be made from possible candidates who are regarded as having the ability to acquire the necessary qualifications during the course of the period of employment. The reference here is made to § 6-5 (1) of the Act relating to universities and university colleges. The appointing authority determines, in such cases, the duration of the period of employment, which may not exceed three years. Applicants should also state in their applications whether they also wish to apply for such a qualificatory appointment.

  • Experience in the practical application of translation technologies, such as CAT tools, MT, etc.

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1013 Professor, NOK 691 400 – 906 000 gross salary per year, code 1011 Associate Professor, NOK 594 400 800 – 667 200 gross salary per year. Higher salary grades may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
