SENIOR SCIENTIST – GUM BASE INNOVATION & SUPPORT


Fertin is the world’s leading B2B supplier of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) chewing gum and specializes in developing and producing nicotine chewing gum. Recently, we have extended our portfolio of delivery platforms within both the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical categories to span a wide range of dispersion forms. The wide range of new dispersion forms makes Fertin Pharma a very interesting partner for leading pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies and in the years to come this will allow us to unlock our very ambitious growth strategy.

To enable our growth agenda, we seek an experienced and committed senior scientist, who has experience with product and process development in either the food industry or the polymer/plastics industry. You will be responsible for our gum base innovation and support to our gum base facility, which is organized in R&D. Gum base is essential for Fertin Pharma’s overall strategy by developing and maintaining new gum bases for our chewing gum products.

As our new senior scientist, you will be part of our Gum base innovation team reporting to Manager of Product Development.

Gum base is the insoluble part of chewing gum, which provides the lasting chewing texture of the gum product. The gum base innovation and support group is a specialized function within Fertin that handles all aspects of gum base including gum base development and support to the gum base production.

The function is an essential part of all chewing gum development projects requiring new gum bases, and our specialists collaborate with specialists from other departments on strategy, formulation and process development. We ensure the right level of gum base documentation for the new products and assist in answering questions from customers and authorities. Furthermore, when making new discoveries during gum base development, we establish them as Fertin property by applying for patents.

Main Responsibilities:

  • As a senior developer, you will be responsible for developing gum bases used in compressed and extruded chewing gum product segments including laboratory, pilot and full scale trials.
  • You will provide technical expert assistance to procurement and QA on gum base raw materials
  • You work in close collaboration with product developers in order to meet the agreed deadlines and output
  • You provide trouble shooting and support to our gum base facility in SC.
  • You will be responsible for maintaining and documenting the development process in order to establish Drug master files.
  • You will be responsible for establishing robust manufacturing processes to meet the agreed commercial targets for the new gum bases before hand over to Supply Chain.
  • You will provide expert assistance in justifying processes and specifications towards customers and authorities.
  • You build up/increase competencies in gum base technology in R&D and SC in close collaboration with management team

We are a small team, where individual responsibilities are mixed with collaboration across those responsibilities and we value the opportunity to discuss and strategize about formulation and process development and optimization.

Required Experience & competencies:

You have a Master’s degree in chemical engineering or similar academic background. You have worked 5+ years within formulation and process development in the food and/or polymer/plastics industry. Experience within polymer blends, is a clear advantage.

Additionally the position requires the following personal qualities: You are a team player, self-motivated, result-oriented, persistent, and you are a disciplined and structured executer with strong communication skills. You are analytically strong, good with numbers and take responsibility of your area. You must be able to speak and write fluently in English.
