This role reports to Application Engineer Manager and is located in New Berlin, Wisconsin. As a HVAC - VFD Regional Application Engineer, you are responsible for application engineering support of the HVAC variable frequency drive - VFD sales. Primary responsibilities include assistance in selection and proper application of VFDs, phone & on-site advanced technical support, channel partner training, harmonic calculations, professional society participation, writing application papers and supporting Product Management with identifying future product needs. It requires the unique ability to build strong relationships and provide differentiating technical expertise in the market.

As a HVAC - VFD Regional Application Engineer, you are responsible for application engineering support of the HVAC variable frequency drive - VFD sales. Primary responsibilities include assistance in selection and proper application of VFDs, phone & on-site advanced technical support, channel partner training, harmonic calculations, professional society participation, writing application papers and supporting Product Management with identifying future product needs. It requires the unique ability to build strong relationships and provide differentiating technical expertise in the market.
Your responsibilities
- Assist Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Cooling (HVAC) channel partners with technical/application opportunities. Support OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) including pump OEMs on VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) projects. Create application specific Technical Notes (white papers).
- Assist the Regional Sales Managers & OEM Team with technical sales support. Attend and participate in sales meetings, product seminars and trade shows.Create presentation content related to HVAC VFDs. Perform local, regional and national presentations to engineers and end users. Provide presentations in-person and via webinar. Participate in knowledge sharing activities.
- Follow established practices and leverage technology to perform harmonic calculations. Use oscilloscopes and metering equipment.
- Create competitive product comparisons.
- Identify market requirements and communicate needs to Product Management. Be well informed about current industry trends and being able to talk intelligently about the HVAC industry and the commercial bid process. Develop positive relationships with channel partners, OEMs and ABB employees. Practice always Integrity and adherence to ABB policies.
- Demonstrate the ability to Display technical knowledge of VFD’s, HVAC systems and Industry protocol’s. Explain pump curves and the impact of a VFD on a pumping system. Implement and support training of the Sales Channel. Speak clearly and express self well in groups and in one-on-one conversations.
- Prepare and deliver clear presentation and carry self well in front of a group and train distributors, OEM’s and end-users in the region. Handle conflict in a win-win fashion whenever possible.
Your background
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering, and 5 years' experience in sales, marketing, product management, engineering, design, quotes/ proposals. OR Associates Degree, preferably in a technical field, and 7 years' experience in sales, marketing, product management, engineering, design, quotes/ proposals.
- Candidates must already have a work authorization that allows them to work for ABB in the United States.
- Open to travel about 20%
- Experience with of VFDs and pumps are important. Technical experience in HVAC pumping applications is highly desirable. Experience with oscilloscopes and metering equipment is preferred too.
