Do you have strong skills in data science and are you interested applying these skills to advancing the understanding of the Greenland ice sheet and climate change? Would you like to be part of a team of active research scientists in an international working environment?
GEUS is looking to engage candidate with strong qualifications within data science in the Department of Glaciology and Climate to contribute to the monitoring of the Greenland ice sheet through the programmes Promice and GC-Net. You may also participate in glaciological field work, research projects and advisory projects concerning for example prediction of hydropower potentials. The starting date is as soon as possible.
Job description
The ideal candidate will have expertise in one or more areas related to data science (statistics, databases, time series, computer vision, large data volumes, machine learning, visualization), demonstrated experience in software engineering and open-source software, and the ability to use these skills to solve problems in the Earth Science domain.
The candidate will both develop and implement data science research and produce novel and practical tools and datasets that will deliver lasting impact to the cryospheric sciences.

Department of Glaciology and Climate
The department has a staff of about 30 researchers, postdocs, PhD-students and support staff. The department has an informal and friendly working environment, and a strong international and interdisciplinary profile.
The department includes two main groups, with strong collaboration across the two groups. The Glaciology group is responsible for monitoring the melting of the Greenland ice sheet and is engaged in multiple research and advisory projects dealing with glacier and climate dynamics. The paleo climate research group is dedicated to Holocene and Anthropocene climate change and its impacts including ice-ocean interactions in Greenland and cryosphere change impacts on marine ecosystems. Besides doing research, we provide advice to the authorities in Denmark and Greenland as well as companies and institutions, both nationally and internationally and provide mentoring and supervision to University students.

Responsibilities:
- Contribute to open science projects
- Produce research products such as well-documented algorithms and code, software.
- Develop analytical and computational tools.
- Work to release open source software and open data, help ensure scientific reproducibility of all results, and contribute to a 'culture of reproducibility'.
- Review and evaluate potential projects for technical merit and feasibility.
- Meet with colleagues and collaborators to clarify goals, identify collaboration opportunities and recommend solutions.
Your qualifications
Required:
- Masters or equivalent in any discipline, with a strong computational background
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in programming and software engineering
- A history of applying one or more programming languages to construct full scientific pipelines, from data ingestion / clean-up to modeling, to visualization and analysis.
- Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing
- Strong capacity for teamwork, collaborative, critical thinking, and attention to detail.
Desired:
- Earth Science experience in one or more of remote sensing of the cryosphere, glaciology, cryospheric hydrology, polar atmospheric processes, or weather stations.
- One or more of: python, Bash, GRASS GIS, R, QGIS programming
- Knowledge and use of Linux, cloud computing, parallel processing
