At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on [xxxxx]

Job Description
Introduction

The Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection Unit (HSE), is looking for a geologist in the frame of the Future Circular Collider study to develop, together with industrial partners and internal experts, reuse pathways for excavated materials.

Are you a geologist with expertise in characterisation of excavated materials and their reuse, familiar with associated regulatory requirements and best practices? Join CERN’s Environment Group to contribute with your skills to the Future CERN Collider (FCC) study and collaborate with the environmental FCC study team. Take part!

Functions

As a Geologist with a background in subsurface engineering and the management of excavated materials, you will actively contribute to support the environmental FCC study team that oversees managing excavated material in the context of the future FCC tunnel construction.

You will:
  • Analyse the results of the geological investigations (geotechnical, geomechanical and mineralogical) in view of characterising the excavated materials with respect to their re-use potentials;
  • Realize complementary laboratory verifications to evaluate the geological characteristics of the material expected to be excavated during the FCC construction;
  • Identify possible reuse- and disposal- elimination pathways for each type of material;
  • Contribute to the development of a specific excavated materials management plan depending on the material’s quality and the feasibility of the possible reuse pathways;
  • Advise the civil engineering team on possible impacts of the excavation methods on the quality of excavated materials and on the environment;
  • Contribute to the future site investigation definition, with a view of characterizing and specifying the excavation materials;
  • Update the documentation related to the excavated materials management strategy.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Geology or Environmental Engineering or a related field.

Experience

Demonstrated experience in the following:
  • Solid knowledge and practical experience in geotechnical, geomechanical, geochemical and mineralogical evaluation of excavated materials.
  • Solid knowledge and practical experience in excavation material characterisation techniques (e.g. Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA), Near infrared (NIR) hyper-spectral analysis or X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and other geo-technical and geo-mechanical characterisation tests).
  • Demonstrated experience in the technical application of environmental regulations related to the storage, transport and reuse of excavated materials.

The following experience would be an asset:
  • Experience in setting up an excavation material management plan.
  • Knowledge of the integration of environmental sustainability aspects (e.g. carbon neutrality principles) in projects or activities.
  • Conducting assessments through mapping, analysing, using data from geographical information systems (GIS).
  • Knowledge of environmental management standards.

Technical competencies:
  • Knowledge of underground structure construction: specifically soil and excavated material treatment techniques.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Law: including Waste Management Laws (knowledge of at least one of CERN's Host states (France/Switzerland) regulations and European regulatory framework).
  • Analytical techniques for soil and excavation materials characterisation.
  • Drafting and writing of official documents

Behavioural competencies:
  • Solving Problems: recognizing what is essential, discriminating between important and peripheral information and being able to see the whole picture
  • Managing Self: working well autonomously and taking on activities and tasks without prompting
  • Learning and Sharing Knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information as well as sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others and coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer
  • Communicating Effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner and keeping to the point
  • Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team and participating fully and taking an active role in team activities

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French. Ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts would be an advantage. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
