My name is Charlotte, and I am looking for a Legal & Compliance Officer to join our team in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The role has two main areas of responsibilities; Legal tasks for the Svitzer Northern Europe Regions; and Compliance assignments for Svitzer Global. It is a new role, which means there is a great opportunity to help with developing and shaping our way of working and have an impact on a global marine services business.

You will become part of the wider Svitzer Global Legal & Compliance community. In addition, Svitzer is part of the Maersk Group, thus you will also work closely with compliance colleagues and specialists across Maersk.

As Svitzer is a global business, this role does require some travel, which can be planned according to yours, as well as business specific needs. Svitzer is a towage company, which means we help our customers manoeuvre their larger ships safely and timely in and out of ports. We operate globally, and most of our business is to support container vessels, cargo ships, cruise ships and navy vessels but we also attend to emergencies like vessels being adrift or offshore fires. The Legal & Compliance team is a strong partner to all business areas and key to drive, support and innovate the future of Svitzer. About the position

Regional Compliance tasks

  • Coordinating internal communications in relation to competition, anti-corruption, export controls, whistle-blower policies etc. between Corporate HQ in Copenhagen and countries within the European region.
  • Assisting in development and implementation of internal processes and procedures within the region, including implementation of directives from Corporate HQ in Copenhagen.

Global Compliance Responsibilities

  • Support with maintaining and developing the ethics and compliance programs, covering Anti Bribery, 3rd party management and Trade Compliance, GDPR & Competition Law.
  • Becoming a trusted advisor to guide the company on compliance issues and challenges.
  • Managing risk assessments, training, and controls.
  • GDPR – work closely with IT and HR.
  • 3rd party management.
  • Project Management – screening tool and automatization.
  • Conducting or overseeing internal investigations.
  • Monitoring business activity and recommending appropriate preventive and corrective actions to mitigate compliance risks.

Commercial and Corporate Governance Responsibilities

  • Advising on contractual set-up and assistance in drafting commercial contracts in relation to charters, shipbuilding, sale and purchase of vessels as well as front-line contracts such as leases.
  • Preparation and maintenance of transaction templates and documentation.
  • Drafting and reviewing corporate documents, including board materials, powers of attorney and transaction approvals.
  • Ensuring maintenance of up-to-date corporate appointments.
  • Assisting in preparation of standardized corporate materials, creating and maintaining corporate files.
  • Liaising with relevant regional personnel, external counsel and registered agents on corporate matters.
  • Setting up new entities and dissolving dormant entities in coordination with external counsel.

We are looking for

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about compliance and who thrives with understanding the business to implement compliance measures as smooth as possible. In general, and as many other companies, we welcome an independent, team-oriented person who can collaborate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders and prioritize effectively in a fast-moving business environment.

Specific skills

  • Danish is not a requirement, good oral and written English skills are.
  • You have a law degree at master’s level with minimum 4 years of experience.
  • Some knowledge of the shipping industry is a definite plus, but not a pre-requisite.
  • You have some experience approaching compliance topics from an international and multijurisdictional angle and are willing to expand your compliance competences, it will be an advantage with prior experience of 3rd party management and GDPR.

Apart from above, we need someone who has a structured approach to your work, and someone who is solution oriented with a degree of pragmatism. You enjoy learning and taking ownership for your area of responsibility. You create results by working closely with other teams and functions and you have skills in project and stakeholder management. You are an independent and creative thinker and a clear and concise communicator with highly developed interpersonal skills.
