Access to justice, justice service provision and human rights have been part of the Danish Institute for Human Rights’ (DIHR) core international work for over two decades. We have adopted and developed concepts that address access to justice based upon a holistic, people-centred approach and grounded in making justice systems more accessible and responsive to rights-holders’ needs. Building on our expertise and by developing a more consolidated programme within our International Division, we seek to expand our justice work in 2020, with a focus on Africa and Asia.

We are seeking an experienced and engaged Human Rights Adviser for the Human Rights Systems Department who can play an integral role in implementing and expanding our access to justice programme internationally.

YOUR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing technical justice expertise and inputs for various projects internationally;
  • Supporting national partners - including training and facilitation activities in access to justice/ rule of law-related areas, targeting diverse audiences in non-native-English-speaking environments;
  • Conducting needs assessments, research and analyses, including legal analyses, as needed to develop justice area programming and support projects;
  • Assisting in identification of strategic opportunities, synergies, partnerships and resource mobilisation;
  • Providing technical and substantive contributions to concept notes, tender writing and programme development relating to access to justice and rule of law;
  • Engaging in dialogue and activities with relevant state and non-state actors in the programme countries to ensure the support necessary for the programme.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERTISE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in law, human rights or related field;
  • Minimum five years professional international experience working in human rights and access to justice, including in developing country contexts;
  • Experience in developing and supporting justice programming, ideally focused on access to justice, legal aid and service provision;
  • Experience and strengths in conducting analyses, needs assessments, and substantive justice-related studies;
  • Knowledge and appreciation of holistic approaches to justice and justice service provision;
  • Ability to develop and implement access to justice programming;
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) required, additional language(s) are desirable, (especially French, Russian, Arabic, Chinese);
  • Experience in partnership-based programmes and diplomatic management of relations with national partners and stakeholders;
  • Experience in tender applications and donor relations considered an asset.

  • You have excellent written and oral communication and inter-personal skills, including a proven ability to work in partnership with state and non-state actors;
  • You have demonstrated strengths in cross-cultural communication and working in politically-sensitive contexts;
  • You are an engaged team player who is easy to work with and enjoys a multi-cultural work environment;
  • You are analytical and constructive;
  • You have strong facilitation, coaching, training and capacity building skills;
  • You are good at networking and building professional relationships cross-culturally;
  • You are flexible (including for travel) and able to take initiative.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The position is a full-time post based in Copenhagen with significant international travel (up to 40 % of work time). Salary is set in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
