Job description and your role

As an adviser you will support the implementation of the Danish Institute for Human Rights´ engagement under the Danish-Arab Partnership Programme that focuses on key state actors with a human rights mandate (in particular NHRIs and governmental actors) in Algeria, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia. The aim is to co-operate and enhance their capacity to respect, protect and fulfil human rights by providing substantive, organisational and processual human rights expertise.

As an adviser at the Danish Institute for Human Rights, your will:

  • Provide direct support on key mandate areas of state actors with a human rights mandate, including capacity development, transferring knowledge on the implementation of charter and treaty body recommendation; as well national human rights policies and/or action plans
  • Support developing/and implementing strategic planning with state actors with a human rights mandate, including providing advice/solutions to human rights problems in general and specific thematic areas depending on the need of the partner/country.
  • Be a key player in the capacity development and design of tools with and for these state actors
  • Develop and facilitate training of state actors /partners on reporting and follow up on charter and treaty bodies recommendations and key mandate areas of the actors
  • Advise colleagues on the DIHR partnership with governmental human rights focal points and other state actors with a human right mandate
  • Provide direct support to national human rights systems including its actors, processes and framework.
  • Exchange with the Programme Manager, Regional Representative and other colleagues to further develop the area of governmental human rights focal points

Required qualification

  • MA degree in political science or law or similar
  • 8-10 years of experience working with state actors with a human rights mandate
  • First-hand knowledge and experience of the international and regional human rights systems
  • Knowledge of and experience in a range of human rights issues including approaches and techniques to advise on highly sensitive and complex problems in their political, ethnic, racial, gender and socio-economic dimensions
  • Experience of implementing human rights recommendations and of law review processes.
  • Extensive experience in developing and facilitating training to partners on methods such as reporting and follow up on charter and treaty bodies and key mandate areas
  • Languages: English is mandatory as this is the working language at the Danish Institute for Human Rights. French or Arabic is mandatory for this position as the engagement with the state actors are implemented in Arab and French speaking countries.
  • Good ability to complete in-depth studies and reach conclusions on possible causes and solutions to human rights problems in specific societies and systems
  • Strong coordination skills and ability to navigate and adapt to the priorities of the state actors incl. government human rights focal points and other key partners of the Danish Institute for Human Rights

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The position is full time and salary will be determined in accordance with your qualification with the possibility to negotiate individual supplements.

The duty station will be either Tunisia or Jordan depending on the candidate, the candidate’s ability to obtain a work permit in either Tunisia or Jordan as well the need of the programme.
