Policy Advisor on Global Advocacy and External Engagement

Copenhagen, Denmark

Would you like to have a central role in the international advocacy efforts of Denmark’s largest humanitarian NGO? Do you have a good understanding of humanitarian policy, displacement issues and advocacy engagement? Would you like to have colleagues in more than 35 countries and ensure DRCs global advocacy stands firmly on our on-the-ground experience and evidence – and vice versa? Are you up for supporting DRCs executive management’s international engagement to promote a dignified life for displaced people?

About the job

DRCs External Relations Secretariat’s purpose is to facilitatea prominent position for advocacy and external engagement of DRC so that DRC’s global policy influencing, and advocacy efforts are coordinated, aligned, well-governed, evidence-informed, principled and targeted and influence policy and proactive at all levels – national, regional and global. In addition, the Secretariat hosts DRCs representations in Geneva and Brussels, as well as dedicated donor compliance and relations functions.

As a Policy Advisor, you will be working to ensure that DRC develops and implements a Global Advocacy and Engagement Plan that leads to changes in perceptions, policies and programmatic responses that benefit people affected by forced displacement. Furthermore, you will be supporting DRCs high-level external engagement by coordinating and producing briefing notes and advise on standpoints and advocacy themes.

We are a small team, but you will be collaborating to a multitude of internal and external stakeholders around the globe.

Concrete, you will be:

1) Responsible for supporting and coordinating DRCs high level international engagement

  • Provide advice and support to the external engagement of DRCs International Director and Secretary General, hereunder the coordination and preparation of speaking points, briefing notes and engagement plans
  • Advise on and coordinate DRCs participation in key global policy processes, conferences and events
  • Follow selected policy agendas within the field of forced displacement and the humanitarian and development area
  • Work closely with DRCs representations in Brussels and Geneva on relevant policy issues and high-level engagement

2) Supporting DRCs advocacy engagement

  • Engage DRCs country and regional offices in relevant policy areas
  • Develop and disseminate advocacy tools
  • Develop and maintain policies and guidelines for advocacy products, sign-off, high-level engagement etc.
  • Support the development of country- and region-specific advocacy strategies
  • Develop training materials and provide support and internal trainings on advocacy engagement
  • Draft and coordinate policy papers, positions and statements
  • Provide input and support to department- and organizational-wide strategic projects and priorities
  • Provide input to press releases and communication strategies with DRCs Communications and Fundraising Department

3) Responsible for coordinating DRCs Global Advocacy Network

  • Maintain, engage and nurture DRCs global advocacy network with advocacy functions at country and regional levels
  • Coordinate and facilitate engagement of the network in DRCs global advocacy engagements
  • Maintain an overview of key advocacy priorities across regions, and a repository of advocacy strategies, plans and products


About you

To be successful in this role we expect you to be a sharp writer, great team player and strong coordinator.

Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required

  • A relevant master’s degree or equivalent
  • 5 years of experience with humanitarian, development or displacement issues
  • Knowledge of the international humanitarian system
  • Experience from INGOs, international or government organizations
  • Excellent writing skills in English
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines

Desirable

  • Experience in working with strategic advocacy and advocacy strategies and plans
  • Experience in training delivery
  • Experience in drafting policy papers
  • Proficiency in Danish desirable

We offer

Contract length: Open-ended contract

Work place: Copenhagen, Denmark

Start date: December 1st 2019

The position is permanent

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the agreement between DRC and AC (Ministry of Finance and State-Employed Professionals with the exceptions arising from the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associates (AC-organisationerne) and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC). including any amendments. This is a national position for which local terms and conditions apply (relocation or housing allowance is not offered for this role).

Please note that you need to have the right to work in Denmark (through nationality or existing work visa) in order to be considered for this role.
