Roche’s Intellectual Property (IP) Department is seeking a Senior EP patent attorney to join its RNA Molecule Research IP department at Roche Innovation Center Copenhagen (RICC), located in Hørsholm, 20 km north of Copenhagen. At RICC, we are around 60 scientists and associates passionate about developing new nucleic acid-based medicines.
This colleague will join a team of two other patent attorneys and one patent assistant in a highly competitive area of science in a dynamic & diverse global matrix environment, connecting with other teams to perform, contribute and operate in the global IP environment. The position and the team are based in Denmark and report to the Head of RNA Molecule Research IP who is based in Basel, Switzerland. The role will entail travelling to Basel from time to time.

Key Responsibilities include:
- Handling Roche’s RNA therapeutics IP assets: global intellectual property rights including drafting & prosecuting patent portfolios, licensing transactions, due diligence assessments, freedom-to-operate, infringement and validity analyses, risk evaluation and mitigation strategies for RNA therapeutics, personalized therapeutics and other novel therapeutic modalities.
- Maintaining and sharing deep expertise and knowledge on legal case law, rules or regulations before the EPO, US Patent & Trademark Office as well as other relevant jurisdictional IP offices and supporting junior colleagues in their development.
- Developing & driving adaptive and creative strategies for Roche’s RNA therapeutics programs, in a fast evolving area of science, seeking opportunities and mitigating risks.
- Proactively partnering with stakeholders at all levels of the global organization and across all phases of research, drug development & commercialization to provide business enabling strategy, counseling and options both in Basel and in Hørsholm.
- Sustainably building enduring, productive external relationships with outside counsel and third party collaborators & partners.
Specific Daily Responsibilities include:
- Hands on work such as drafting, filing, prosecuting patent applications worldwide, FTO searches and analysis, counseling, strategizing, IP contracts drafting, negotiations etc.
- Identifying and seizing opportunities to create IP value. Act as an excellent strategist and influencer, displaying and acting with courage & integrity in tackling challenging IP issues within as well as beyond the RNA therapeutics area.
- Proactively co-creating patent practices to meet changing legal and business needs, focusing on solutions that are good for the enterprise rather than particular stakeholders.
- Communicating & collaborating enthusiastically across time zones and cultures.
Who you are
You have, at a minimum, a master’s degree in chemistry or biology or other area relevant to pharmaceutical IP practice. You have a minimum of 2 years of experience post successfully passing the European Qualification Examination and experience with handling global IP portfolios;
You can communicate clearly, listen actively and are composed under pressure. It is important that you are able to collaborate across global & local teams and tackle new challenges with curiosity and openness to learning.
In addition you also:
- Are a great teammate with good business acumen
- Have experience in supporting teams of scientists and business people in developing & implementing global IP strategies or initiatives, both substantive & operational;
- Are capable of doing some IP transaction work including but not limited to due diligences, M&A, complex collaborations, asset acquisitions and settlement agreements;
- Have experience in leading adverse proceedings such as patent challenges and/or litigation;
Experience with early stage, clinical development, and launched products as well as manufacturing & technology based IP is required; Experience with RNA technology and at least 4 years in a pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, or biotechnology corporation would be a plus.
