ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES
BAT Nordics is a key area for the BAT group in delivering its purpose to build A Better Tomorrow™ by reducing the health impact of our business through offering a greater choice of enjoyable and less risky* products. The Legal Counsel in BAT’s Danish Legal team will be responsible for the provision of high quality, commercially focussed legal advice to enable the business to meet its commercial and strategic objectives. The role holder will provide legal advice across all of BAT’s product categories and to all business functions in the Nordics with specific focus on the Danish, Finnish, Greenlandic, Icelandic and Faroese markets.
*Based on the weight of evidence and assuming a complete switch from cigarette smoking. These products are not risk free and are addictive.
The successful candidate will act as a dedicated point of contact for all legal matters supporting the entire business and Legal Team across a range of legal, regulatory, and reputational issues.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR
- Provide all aspects of legal support and general commercial and regulatory advice relevant to the manufacturing, labelling, marketing, sale, and distribution of BAT’s products within oral nicotine, vaping and tobacco.
- Identify and mitigate legal risk in proposed commercial activities, including regulatory restrictions, intellectual property, data protection, consumer protection, competition, and compliance risks.
- Interpret the current and proposed legal environment and advise the business on compliance in reaching its objectives and to ensure the business adheres to the legal requirements and BAT’s internal policies.
- Contribute to cross functional projects and initiatives to assess, monitor, and anticipate potential and actual threats to the business, working closely with External Affairs.
- Develop and organise appropriate training to the business.
- Instruct and manage external counsel when needed, reviewing output, and controlling and approving spend as required.
- Contribute to drive the legal compliance agenda (Anti-Bribery & Corruption, GDPR, Standards of Business Conduct, Competition Law etc).
CAN THIS BE YOUR FUTURE ROLE?
- Do you have an innovative, curious, and problem-solving mindset?
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Danish qualified lawyer or business lawyer with a minimum of +3 years post qualification experience either from an inhouse legal position, a relevant public authority, or a law firm.
- Experience with marketing regulations, consumer regulation and general commercial law and preferably environmental product regulations.
- Ability to draft and negotiate commercial contracts.
- Fluent in English and Danish, and an ability to understand Swedish and Norwegian.
- Highly organized, able to work at pace with minimal supervision and multitasking ability to deal with multiple complex issues at the same time.
- Analytical ability to spot underlying cause of business issues and to tackle these in the most efficient and commercially effective ways.
- Must have excellent drafting and presentational skills. Extensive experience with using Power Point presentations is a plus.
- Ability to engage and communicate at all levels in a clear, calm, and coherent manner, act on own initiative, applying good judgment.
- Strong influencing and problem-solving skills; with the ability to work with peers and senior management, inspiring trust, and confidence.
- Capacity to explain highly complicated and technical issues and concepts including identification of relevant business considerations for decision to others in a manner appropriate to their needs.
- Ability to understand the needs of the business and express them clearly, calmly, concisely, and effectively without confusing with verbose legal language.

- Experience within an FMCG business or a business operating in a highly regulated environment.
- Experience of advising on Data Protection and Privacy.
- Experience of advising on marketing law, product compliance and environmental law.
