Are you eager to communicate new research from Danish universities, which contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals in Global South countries? Are you prepared to cover the full story about the researchers and institutions involved? Can you captivate the readers while explaining the scientific process? Do you have an excellent grasp command of the English language?

Danish Development Research Network (DDRN.dk) is seeking a science journalist to join the DDRN team in communicating new research at Danish universities and institutions to the public sphere. The research must focus on challenges in the Global South and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in terms of impact.

The position offered is part of ‘DDRNupdate’ - an editorial initiative funded by the Media Grant facility of the Danish Ministry of Culture.

Your profile

  • Science journalist graduated from one of the journalism schools, or an academic with further training in journalism
  • Significant experience in science journalism/communication
  • Strong proficiency in written English
  • Commitment to global challenges and Global South issues
  • Knowledge of Danish universities and research institutions
  • Editorial experience and self-drive

Work tasks

The research news editor will:

  • write posts regularly for ddrn.dk
  • suggest stories to be covered by the DDRN network of science journalists and DDRN interns
  • edit contributions from the DDRN network of science journalists and DDRN interns
  • participate in the strategy development and implementation of DDRN_update

The research news editor will contribute critical, independent, and solution-oriented science journalism, which strives to:

  • Situate cases of new research within its wider scientific field and the profile of the participating researchers and their institution,
  • Clarify the methodologies applied in the research process,
  • Explain potential and pathways of knowledge gained to impact upon targeted SDGs
  • Describe the ’eco-system’ of research in the national context and internationally, i.e., the South-North divide in resources for research and national differences in research policies and priorities,

DDRN will publish research news in the following formats:

  • Research news items, focusing on the problem addressed – including cultural expressions of the phenomena studied - and insights gained
  • Features on selected results, portrait of the project leader and/or the research group
  • Feature on the research process leading to significant results

DDRN offers

An exciting job in an informal work environment of a developing non-governmental organisation and with a large scope for responsibility and creativity.

Employment

Place of work: Dronningensgade 14, DK-Copenhagen K.

The position is for 12 months of half-time employment. Extension of the period may be possible depending on available funding. There is a mutual trial period of three months.

Salary in accordance with the collective agreement of the Danish Journalists’ Association. Additional allowance may be negotiated.
