Freelance - København Ø

Niels Bohr Institute at Faculty of Science, the University of Copenhagen is looking for a Lead Engineer with effect from 1 December 2024 or as soon as possible hereafter.

About us
The position is with the quantum optics Center QUANTOP at the Niels Bohr Institute. QUANTOP is a vibrant research laboratory developing novel principles and devices for quantum sensing, quantum communication and quantum technologies. We are a group of about twenty researchers and graduate students working with entangled and squeezed light sources, non-classical states of atoms and solid state oscillators.

The announced position is for the period 2024 – 2030 and is funded by the Copenhagen Center for Biomedical Quantum Sensing – CBQS established with the grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The new Center is a collaborative effort between the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Texas in Austin and Danish Technical University. The primary goal of the Center will be to develop and use novel quantum sensing principles and techniques for biomedical diagnostics that can operate near and beyond standard quantum limits of sensitivity, providing ultra-sensitive platforms for early detection of disease and facilitating profound investigations into molecular systems at an unprecedented scale and precision. Towards this goal we will have to break interdisciplinary boundaries and work across disciplines developing collaborations between medical experts and quantum physicists.

Tasks
The successful candidate will be designing and fabricating sensors for magnetic fields based on atomic vapor cells. The activity will be based at the Niels Bohr Institute, although collaboration with the other institutions of the Center will be encouraged. In particular, collaborative effort with medical institutions in the Copenhagen area and beyond is envisioned.

Your tasks will include

  • Design of the sensors of electro-magnetic fields and conductivity based on alkali atomic vapors in spin protecting environment
  • Fabrication of such sensors for sensing beyond standard quantum limits and for quantum-enhanced sensing
  • Providing general expert advice to the students and researchers of the Center within the above -mentioned fields of activity

We expect

  • PhD degree in experimental physics or related area
  • Extensive experience with fabrication of alkali atom-based sensors for sensitive magnetometry
  • Experience with applications of atom-based sensors in quantum limited sensing
  • Experience with working in a research team
  • Good communication skills and ability to coordinate the work in a complex research environment

We offer
You will be involved in the unique, exciting international activity aimed at applications of quantum physics to biomedical sensing and early diagnostics of disease. We aim at making Denmark a world leader in quantum sensing for biomedical applications, and we hope to attract people from all over the world.

Life in Denmark is supported with strong social services (free universal healthcare, free/subsidized language courses, paid parental leave, subsidized day care institutions and excellent public schools). Our work culture is very egalitarian and prioritizes work life balance. Dual career families are the norm, and workplaces offer flexibility to support everyone in having both an exciting career and good family time. Danish cities are known for having excellent infrastructure, for example through widespread bike path networks. We can also offer a thriving food-scene, excellent museums, and beautiful natural scenery.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Terms of salary and employment
The employment and salary are made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

Employment will be as academic officer or special consultant. The salary is based on seniority. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible. The working time are 37 hours per week on average. The working hours are flexible.

Your application
If you find the job interesting, please send an electronic application with attachment via Jobportalen (click on the link "Apply Now" at the bottom of the post) no later than 6 October 2024.

The University of Copenhagen seeks to reflect society and encourages applications irrespective of personal background.
