Freelance - København S

The University of Copenhagen is looking for a person to spearhead the development of the new South Campus Data Lab. We look for a part-time lab leader (approximately 20 hrs/week), starting at the earliest possible date, preferably July 1st for four years of employment. We expect the successful candidate to already be employed in a university research position as associate professor.

The University of Copenhagen is establishing the South Campus Data Lab as part of a university-wide effort to enhance and extend the use of digital methods and data science across all faculties and the appointee will lead the South Campus Data Lab as part of this cross-university network of data specialists and data labs.

Job description:

The South Campus Data Lab will mainly service researchers from the Faculty of the Humanities, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Theology. The aim of the Lab is to help researchers integrate digital methods in their research projects. Digital tools and methods are already employed in a variety of ways, ranging from specialized uses of machine learning models, to manual collection of online data and database design by scholars at the South Campus. The mission of the Lab will be to support the efforts of already active users, and to extend the knowledge and use of data analysis.

The job will offer the successful candidate the chance to lead the South Campus Data Lab during its founding phase. You will be expected to help establish the lab as a hub for development of methods for data analytical research, as well a vibrant environment for collaboration and knowledge exchange between researchers from the South Campus. The job requires the ability to combine a deep understanding of the potentialities of data analysis with the diverse requirements of researchers from a wide variety of scholarly backgrounds as well as outreach activities to engage researchers who may not yet see the potentialities of data analytical tools for their own research, and to ensure the visibility of the Lab to all research environments at the South Campus.

The candidate will work part-time (20 hrs/week) as leader of the lab, to allow them to retain a productive relationship with their scholarly environment, to also build and maintain a strong relationship between activities in the Lab and a contemporary research agenda in digital methods. To help the Lab Leader situate the activities in relation to the very diverse research activities, the lab will also fund smaller grants for workload reduction for researchers from departments at the South Campus, who will then be available for joint consultations with researchers seeking assistance at the Lab.

You will also be expected to manage the Lab’s resources, both in terms of hardware and software, as well as affiliated staff, which will include a full-time data specialist and a number of student assistants. To ensure the success of the Lab, integration and collaboration with the other labs currently being established at the University of Copenhagen is a key priority, in order to ensure maximum synergies across the initiative. In addition to the leadership role, you should also expect to participate in developing courses for data analytical work (for example in R or Python), as well as consulting on research projects as time permits (see the job description for the data specialist for details https://jobportal.ku.dk/alle-opslag/?show=151626

Your qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a PhD in either computer science or engineering, or one of the research fields located at the South Campus. In addition, you should have:

  • A strong knowledge of a variety of data analytical competencies, including for example text mining, machine learning, APIs and scraping, R or Python, social network analysis, GIS etc.
  • A strong knowledge of the technical requirements of data analytical work, including infrastructure (e.g. data management, storage solutions), and programming skills.
  • Be pro-active, collaborative, and taking responsibility for the successful development of the Lab.
  • Documented research experience involving quantitative, digital methods, preferably from one or more areas covered by the Faculties at the South Campus
  • Experience with university administration and management and/or formal leadership training will be considered an advantage.

You will be employed as a Senior executive advisor in the Research & Impact Support Office at the Faculty of Humanities https://hum.ku.dk/omfakultetet/fakultetsservice/alle/forskning-og-impact

Application deadline is May 22th 2020.

Questions about the position can be addressed to Associate Professor Rasmus Helles, Department of Communication via email: [email protected] or tel. 45 35 32 91 87, and to Senior Adviser, Lene Offersgaard, Research & Impact via email: [email protected] tel. 45 28 18 30 07.
