The scientific activities of ICARS are expanding and we are looking for a candidate to take on the role as Scientific Team Lead to head ICARS scientific activities in close collaboration with the Science Director.

About ICARS
The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) is a young organization with a mission to develop evidence-based solutions to mitigate antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in low- and middle-income countries. Working in partnership with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), ICARS use intervention and implementation research to support the countries in implementing their National Action Plans. ICARS is a self-governing organization obliged to follow many of the rules and regulations for the Danish Public Sector.

About the position
As Science Team Lead you will work closely with the Science Director to lead on ICARS scientific activities, including the work to co-develop and implement demonstration projects in LMICs. You will responsible for the daily operation of the science team and will be line manager of the team of (currently) 7 science advisors. Your main tasks will include:

  • Human resource management of the science advisors, including line management, performance management and professional development
  • Daily operation of the Science Department, including but not limited to consultative and collaborative project/task allocation, implementation of the co-development process, identification and prioritization of supporting activities, identification and appointment of subject matter experts for ICARS projects and, monitoring of the science budget
  • Day-to-day dialogue with staff and decision making about project development and implementation based on updates of individual projects and activities by the principal advisor and in collaboration with regional leads and senior ICARS experts (i.e. senior implementation scientist and senior veterinary scientist)
  • In close collaboration with the Scientific Director lead discussions in the science team on the strategic development of scientific activities
  • Representation of ICARS in meetings with external stakeholders
  • Oversight of demonstration and supporting project development and management alignment with Operations and Communications Teams
  • Advise ICARS Executive Management through participation in meetings of the Executive Management group (SPO-meetings).

Your background, professional and personal qualifications
The ideal candidate has an MD, PhD or MSc in human or veterinary medicine, or equivalent experience, and holds experience from similar positions, including demonstrated skills and experience with team management.

The candidate has a minimum of 5-7 years of applied research experience in AMR and experience in working with or in LMICs. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have the following qualifications and experiences:

  • Proven experience in management of teams consisting of highly experienced team members
  • Working with or in LMICs in conducting intervention and implementation research studies including using advanced research methods
  • Project management including planning, resourcing, allocating budget, monitoring and reporting
  • Initiating and maintaining partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Working across science and policy
  • Leading technical assessments and review of research
  • Experience in cross-sector/One Health research.

Knowledge and understanding of ICARS model of working and scientific engagement with LMICs will be considered an advantage.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with evidence of having managed teams of highly experienced people Evidence of ability to multi-task and manage a fluctuating and at times heavy workload
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesise information conveying key points clearly and concisely

  • Proficiency in English (English is our working language)

  • Proven effective stakeholder/working relationships both in relation to establishment and maintanence of these
  • Ability to work independently as well as with teams.

Terms of employment
You will be employed in accordance to the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC) (overenskomst for akademikere i staten). Appointment terms will be as senior consultant with personnel management (chefkonsulent med personaleleledelse). Salary will depend on your educational background and level of experience.

We are based at Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen, Denmark.
