The Faculty of Theology, University of Copenhagen, invites applicants for a vacant PhD position.
Job description
The PhD position, “Theology and ethics of domesticated animals“is a fixed termed full time position for three years with research and teaching obligations starting 1 October 2024 or 1 November 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The research will be conducted as part of as part of the research project CARNAL: Eco-Ethical Articulations of Body, Meat, and Flesh. More information about the project is available here on the website of CARNAL: CARNAL – University of Copenhagen (ku.dk)
The central objective of the research project is to develop new conceptualizations of the relation between humanity and nature in times of ecological crises. CARNAL expands the ethical tradition of self-care and care for other humans into an ecologized ethics of care. We focus on everyday dilemmas and options for change in the areas of consumption, biodiversity, and conceptions of everyday human interactions with the corporeality of ecological networks. CARNAL is placed at the Faculty of Theology, and its methodology aims to coordinate the fields of Anthropology and Theology.
The PhD-project “Theology and ethics of domesticated animals” is supposed to critically use and test the CARNAL typology of Ecology1-2-3 on leading ecotheological views on domesticated animals (such as dogs, cats, or horses, or production animals such as cattle, pigs, or chicken). Together with a postdoc working on “Rewilded Bodies,” the PhD-project explores and compares different forms of human-nonhuman resonance experiences across rewilded and domesticated animal bodies.
Candidates are expected to have a background in Theology or Philosophy and should be able to attend bi-weekly meetings of the CARNAL-project at UCPH. The Candidate will be enrolled in the PhD School of the Faculty of Theology, see https://teol.ku.dk/english/research/phd_programme.
