A clinical position as consultant of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital is open for appointment from as soon as possible.
The position is combined with a 5-year externally funded position as clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery with special focus on treatment of sports-related injuries in connective tissue, regenerative surgery and arthroscopic surgery at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
With this new position the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital wishes to strengthen the leadership in clinical research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen. The aim is to continue and develop the topics that are taken care of by the Sports Traumatology Unit including a number of highly specialized functions. The focus is on surgical treatment of sport-related injuries, research related to sports surgery and related areas, as well as dissemination of the field and teaching at pre- and postgraduate level.
It is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

About the hospital and the department
Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital covers as an acute hospital the population area of around 460.000 inhabitant (“Byen”). Several functions at main- or regional level as well as a few at highly specialized level take place at the hospital. The coming 4 years will finalize the building of “New Bispebjerg Hospital” which opens completely new possibilities for the outpatient elective function at Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery M consists of 2 stationary ward units, a combined elective and same-day surgery ward, 2 operation theatre units, an outpatient clinic as well as a Sports Traumatology Unit and Institute of Sports Medicine with each their outpatient clinics. The department overall has 300 employees hereof 85 medical doctors. The department covers acute treatment of orthopaedic diseases and has a broad elective orthopaedic function within foot surgery, sports surgery, sports medicine, alloplastic surgery, trauma surgery and hand surgery. The department has yearly 35000 outpatient visits and 600 operations. The department has regional function within foot surgery, arthroscopic surgery and shoulder alloplastic surgery, and highly specialized function in sports surgery.
The Sports Traumatology Unit at Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital is one of the countries largest within Sports Surgery and Traumatology. The unit covers highly specialized functions within Sports Surgery (multi-ligament surgery in knee, meniscal and cartilage transplantation, cruciate ligament and cartilage in children plus trochleaplastic surgery), and regional function within e.g. hip arthroscopy. Further, the unit performs arthroscopic treatment in shoulders, thoraco-scapular joint, sternoclavicular joint, elbow, knee- and ankle joint, open and scopic treatment of connective tissue injury and treatment of villonodular synovitis/synovial chondromatosis.
The Sports Surgery Unit consists of 13 orthopaedic specialist doctors (1 professor, 10 chief surgeons and 2 department specialists). Around 1700 sports surgical operations and 8500 outpatient visits are performed annually. The unit interacts cross disciplinary and with a research collaboration with Institute of Sports Medicine, Dept of Physiotherapy and Dept of Radiology. The unit works as a separate section within the Dept of Orthopaedic Surgery and has its own conferences, a separate educational program and own outpatient and secretary function. The unit has a long tradition for a close research collaboration with Institute of Sports Medicine, and has several national and international collaborators in relation to e.g. Patient Reported Outcome Measures, biomechanics, anatomy, epidemiology. The unit is a part of IOC Research Centre Copenhagen.
Clinical functions and focus areas of the department
The position requires a specialist education in orthopaedic surgery with documented experience in acute and elective orthopaedic surgery. In the evaluation of candidates, the focus will be upon the applicant’s interest and treatment experience within sports traumatology. It is not a definitive requirement, that the candidate at the time of application master all the functions that the sports traumatology unit at the department currently handles, but has to be willing to obtain and learn skills within several highly specialized areas together with the other doctors at the department. Experience with ultrasonography is advantageous. Finally, emphasis will be on the applicant’s experience within research, education and quality development, as well as the ability to work cross-disciplinary.
It is expected that the applicant in the position will build up own research areas at the department and interact with current research groups.
The position is without on-call function, but all the doctors at the Sports Surgical Unit participate without any specific honorarium in sampling of connective tissue from donors, which often takes place during day-work time.
Research and teaching

Qualifications
Applicants must be board-certified specialist in ortopaedic surgery.
Conditions
In order to be considered, the applicant must send an application to both the Faculty (the professorship) and to the hospital (the consultancy) cf. the simultaneously advertised position of the professorship. Appointment is conditioned by the fact that the applicant obtains both positions. This also applies to the applicants who are already employed as consultants at Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital.
Salary and conditions of employment as consultant are as agreed between the Danish Regions and the Danish Association of Medical Specialists and between the Capital Region/Region Zealand and University of Copenhagen.
As clinical professor at least 50 % of the working time will be allocated to academic tasks (e.g. research, teaching, evaluation tasks and communication with the public) in agreement with the Head of Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. The remaining time will be allocated for clinical work in agreement with the head of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The clinical professor will receive secretarial or technical support equivalent to 50 % of a full time secretary position from the department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Additional support and details on the working conditions must be negotiated with the head Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg Hospital.
