About the Digestive Disease Centre
Copenhagen University Hospital – Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg is one of four emergency hospitals in the Capital Region. At the Digestive Disease Centre K, we handle medical gastroenterology/hepatology, as well as acute and elective surgery. Our scope in gastroenterology/hepatology is primarily IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) and liver diseases, and within surgery, our primary focus is on the treatment of colorectal cancer, advanced endoscopy, complex IBD- fistulas and anal fistulas, as well as giant hernias and parastomal hernias.
Our admission area covers the Copenhagen City Area with approximately 475,000 citizens, Bornholm with around 43,000 citizens for selected diseases, and the Faroe Islands for rectal cancer. In the Digestive Disease Centre K's gastro-medical section, we have a ward with 20 beds, including 3 intermediate observation beds, and an associated inpatient clinic with a cirrhosis clinic. Additionally, we have a large outpatient clinic that also houses the hospital's diagnostic unit. In the surgical section, we have an acute surgical admission unit, two inpatient wards, and a same-day surgical section. Furthermore, we have an operating ward emergency and elective operating rooms, a surgical outpatient clinic, and a stoma clinic. Both the medical and surgical sections share an endoscopy unit with eight rooms and a research unit.
The Digestive Disease Centre K has a well-functioning research section and is expanding research in areas such as IBD, NASH, chronic pancreatitis, the microbiome of the intestine, and more. Within surgical research, there is a focus on colorectal cancer, hernia, complex anal fistulas, and acute pancreatitis.
At the Digestive Disease Centre K, we focus on strengthening collaboration between the medical and surgical sections through joint conferences, and we develop interdisciplinary functions in diagnostics and treatment, such as endoscopy and ultrasound, which are currently our areas of focus. We also have a significant emergency activity, treating patients with acute abdomen, gastrointestinal bleeding, ileus, pancreatitis, acute proctology, liver coma, and more.
