The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences covers a range of strong and internationally recognized research areas in clinical veterinary sciences. Our research supports teaching in a manner and quality securing continued national and international bench marking. The Section for Medicine, Oncology and Veterinary Clinical Pathology’s joint research area is the inter-dependency between inflammation and hemostasis as part of the innate immune defense and development of assays for predictive biomarkers in companion animal and comparative medicine. The section holds clinical teaching and service obligations within companion animal general, internal and critical care medicine, oncology, clinical nutrition and veterinary clinical pathology and collaborates across fields nationally and internationally.

Veterinary clinical pathology is part of the Section for Medicine, Oncology and Veterinary Clinical Pathology and includes the University of Copenhagen Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which is a modern, well-equipped, full service laboratory with advanced laboratory equipment including world-class hemostasis and inflammation research laboratories.

The aim of the laboratory is to provide a full range of research and routine analyses across species as well as develop new analysis including biomarkers, which may be requested in connection with patient work in both the Companion Animal and Large Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospitals as well as requested in research projects involving animal model work at the faculty, and from national and international collaboration partners. The associate professor is expected to participate actively in the development of and the activities in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory including coordinating the projects.

Veterinary clinical pathology is a core discipline in the fourth, fifth and final years of the veterinary education in Denmark. The associate professor will therefore be expected to take a leadership role in both teaching and examining undergraduate students, as well as assist and promote the development of further teaching strategies within this field. Furthermore, to provide continuous professional educations seminars for veterinarians in general practice as well as teaching in the international postgraduate Masters program within Companion Animal Clinical Sciences.

Job description

In considering applications for the associate professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant´s ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of veterinary clinical pathology. Veterinary clinical pathology is an internationally recognized cross-species discipline within veterinary sciences.

The associate professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers as well as securing external funding
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications

  • PhD degree or similar qualifications in relation to the above subject area
  • Research and teaching experience within the field of the position
  • The applicant must hold a DVM with license to practice in Denmark, or be willing to apply for such within 6 months
  • Qualifications within one or more of the following scientific areas within veterinary clinical pathology are required: Inflammation, haemostasis, biomarkers, clinical biochemistry, haematology, endocrinology, urinalysis, and clinical diagnostic cytology

The associate professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.
The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
