Associate professor in Computation in Physics
Department of Computer Science & Niels Bohr Institute
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Computer Science (DIKU) and the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for an associate professorship in computation in physics.

The successful candidate will become associate professor at DIKU in a joint position with NBI with 50 % of the time for the first 5 years allocated to taking part in leading cross-disciplinary research and teaching between physics and computer science. At DIKU, the associate professor will join the Programming Languages and Theory of Computation Section (https://di.ku.dk/english/research/pltc/). The section's research involves a wide range of theoretical topics and applications. At NBI, the associate professor will join the Condensed Matter Physics (https://www.nbi.ku.dk/english/research/condensed-matter-physics//). The research in the section spans a broad range of research areas including eScience and scientific computing.

Applicants are expected to have a strong publication record in the general area of computation in physics, especially in the development of novel mathematical methods and efficient algorithms for solving problems in physics, and is expected to have a substantial track record of publications at premier venues. The associate professor is expected to spearhead cross-disciplinary collaborative efforts between computer science, physics, and related areas such as chemistry and mathematics; prior cross-disciplinary research experience, or experience in the above related fields, is an advantage. Furthermore, the associate professor is expected to teach courses at the intersection of computer science and physics, for example scientific computing, and must be able to supervise students at all levels across these fields.

All outstanding applicants within the general area will be considered. For inspiration, research areas of interest could be, but are not limited to:

  • Algorithms for many-body quantum mechanics (e.g., efficient algorithms for tackling high-dimensional geometry).
  • Non-standard methods for solving wave equations.
  • Efficient computation in non-Euclidean and discrete geometries (e.g., wave equations on low-dimensional materials).
  • Effective computation in operator algebras, for example those arising in quantum theory.
  • Automated analysis of simulation data, for example climate simulations.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required, or must be commenced shortly after starting work in the position. It is preferred that the applicant has a wide-range of research-based teaching experience on all levels of the university education. Candidates should ideally have been responsible for lectures and course development as well as supervision at both bachelor and master's levels. International teaching experience will be considered an advantage.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of master’s and PhD students. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, and their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and outreach qualifications of applicants, including the ability to attract external funding and collaborating with both academic and industry partners, will also be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for associate professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
