Tenure-track assistant Professor or Associate Professor within university science education and/or digital university education
Department of Science Education
Faculty of Science

University of Copenhagen

The Department of Science Education seeks applications for two positions with different profiles (see below). The positions are at either tenure-track assistant professor or associate professor level. Candidates who are in doubt about which level of position (assistant or associate professor) to apply for are encouraged to apply for both levels. The two positions are open from February 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We seek candidates with a research record within higher education teaching and learning related to science education. Candidates are to make explicit which of the following profiles they apply for:

Profile 1: General higher science education

For this profile, we seek candidates with a research record within higher science education in general. This can include university teacher competences, curriculum development, the interaction of the cultural and institutional setting with different student backgrounds, disciplinary science teaching and learning in higher education. Candidates with other research profiles in teaching and learning in higher education are also encouraged to apply and will be considered.

Profile 2: Digitalization of higher education
For this profile, we seek candidates who can demonstrate research experience within the consequences and possibilities of digitalization of higher education; this can include students’ digital literacy, the digitalization of core topic curricula, and the integration of digital tools and media in higher education teaching and learning.

Duties for both profiles include

  • Research, development work, grant applications, supervision and (depending on the level of position) research management
  • Departmental teaching – hereunder supervising students, preparing and participating in examinations, courses for university staff at other departments
  • Other tasks requested by the Department – including engaging with and participate in Department and Faculty governance structures.

For both profiles

We value that the candidates have documented experience with:

  • Pedagogical development in higher education settings – this could be development of university teachers in general or more particular their digital pedagogical competences.

  • Collaborating with a broad range of study programs about planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching and education.
  • The Department of Science Education is an interdisciplinary department and the successful applicant is expected to engage in activities and collaborations across disciplines in relation to teaching and development work

Both profiles are expected to actively take part in running and developing the university’s educational program for teachers, including developing new and teaching existing courses and workshops for teachers. Both profiles will be engaged in teaching at the Teaching and Learning in Higher Education program for teachers at the Faculty of Science (see more at https://www.ind.ku.dk/english/course_overview/up/ ).

Both profiles are expected to engage in development work in particular in relation to strategic initiatives across the university. Currently a key activity is the support of an increasingly hybridized university through development of students’ and teachers’ digital competences. We expect that both profiles are willing and able to engage in such work. However, both positions are related to teaching and development work that covers a wide range of topics within science higher education.

We expect the applicants will be able to teach in Danish after having completed sufficient language courses.

Formal expectations to the candidate

  • Candidates who apply for the position as tenure-track assistant professor must have an academic standing showing internationally competitive research, and/or have internationally recognized high potential to make a future impact.
  • Candidates who apply for the position as associate professor must (beyond the above) have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and teaching portfolio. Formal pedagogical training and supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher development program for assistant professors is required.

Assessment of applicants depends on which type of position is applied for:

  • Assessment of applicants for the position as tenure-track assistant professor will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.

  • Assessment of applicants for the position as associate professor will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organizational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
