The Faculty of Theology, University of Copenhagen, invites applicants for a position as Associate Professor in Old Testament studies to be filled by 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
The candidate should demonstrate an active research agenda within the Old Testament studies and document high level of the implied language skills.

The position will be located in the Section of Biblical Exegesis. The Section studies the formative writings of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, in the Old Testament, the New Testament and the Qur’an. These scriptures and related literature, especially the Dead Sea Scrolls, are studied both separately and in terms of their interrelationship (see https://teol.ku.dk/english/dept/abe/. The Section has a record of participating in the production and revision of Danish Bible translation.

In recent years, the Section has developed a strategic focus on various topics of central importance to the study of the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Qur’an. Notably, research has focused on apocalypticism and eschatology, on the Dead Sea Scrolls, and on migration and diaspora studies. Moreover, the Section has a strong focus on biblical languages as well as Qur’anic Arabic and related ancient Near Eastern languages (e.g., Akkadian, Ugaritic, Coptic), the materiality of ancient texts, and translations (ancient and modern). The Section wishes both to develop these areas further and to explore new research options. The ideal candidate will be able to contribute to one or more of these fields, to relate his or her research to one or more of them, or to engage in a constructive dialogue with them from a different scholarly vantage point.

The position involves commitment to take an active part in the Faculty’s research environment and research-based teaching, including examination and supervision related to the theology programmes at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels, open programmes and any new areas of study. The teaching obligation is five (5) hours per week on average. Teaching, examination and supervision at BA and MA levels take place in Danish.

The candidate should actively be willing to attempt to attract funding and managing research projects as well as be willing to partake in any other administrative tasks at section and faculty level.

Qualification requirements
Qualifications are specified further below:

In terms of research qualifications, the successful applicant must have a PhD degree or the equivalent within Old Testament Studies. The successful candidate should also demonstrate:

  • An active and recognized research profile in Old Testament Studies, incl. academic prizes
  • An articulated vision and strategy for Old Testament and Biblical Studies
  • A considerable number of peer-reviewed publications in recognized journals and/or books or anthologies
  • Participation in national and international academic networks and conferences, primarily with own contributions
  • Be able to present a five year research plan

In terms of teaching, the applicant should demonstrate:

  • Considerable teaching experience, including examinations and experience with practical course development that incorporates knowledge of learning, teaching and didactics
  • A teaching portfolio that documents teaching experience and reflections on teaching skills

In terms of societal impact, the applicant should demonstrate:

  • Experience of communicating research to relevant stakeholders, including students
  • Collaboration with private and/or public organisations

In terms of organisational contribution, the applicant should render probable:

  • A collegiate spirit and commitment to collaboration and relationship-building
  • Participation in interdisciplinary collaboration within the Faculty of Theology as well as other faculties

In terms of research funds and recognition of academic merit, the applicant should demonstrate:

  • Experience of applying for (and, if applicable, managing) research funds
  • Ability to obtain academic grants and prizes

According to the language policy of UCPH, it is expected that associate professors with an international background are able to contribute to teaching in Danish after 3-6 years, including grading and supervising students.

Terms of employment
Terms of appointment and salary will be in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The salary range starts at DKK 40,108 + a 17.1% contribution to the pension scheme. It is possible to negotiate salary supplements on an annual basis.
